Goa Pro League starts today
PANAJI: Dempo Sports Club will take on Vasco Sports Club in the opening match of Goa Pro League at Duler Stadium, Mapusa on Sunday, Agust 24. The kickoff is 4 pm. The 10-team tournament will have nine rounds and will conclude on October 10. Tuff Laxmi Prasad, Goa Velha, Sporting Clube de Goa, Salgaocar FC, Sesa FA, Cavelossim, Churchill Brothers and Calangute are the other clubs in the fray. Meanwhile, the GFA has announced that the season tickets for the league have been priced at Rs 1000. There will be a surprise prize for the lucky season ticket. Daily tickets for the league will be priced at Rs.30, while the VIP tickets will be priced at Rs 300 per day.

OL Lourdes HS, GHS Pissurlem win tenniquoits tourney
VALPOI: Sattari taluka under-14 tenniquoits competition for boys and girls was conducted by Directorate of Sports and Youth Affairs at Our Lady of Lourdes High School, Valpoi recently. Four high school teams participated in the competition. In the boy’s category, GHS Pissurlem defeated Our Lady of Loudes High School, Valpoi 2-1 to grab the first position. In the girls category, Our Lady of Lourdes, Valpoi defeated GHS Pissurlem 3-1 to emerge Sattari taluka champions. The winning teams will now participate at district level in the next competition at Mapusa. NT

Nerul SC in last 8
MARGAO: Nerul SC scored an easy 3-1 win against Fr Agnelo S Club, Paroda to enter the quarterfinals of Zenia and Ziya inter-village football tournament played at Manora grounds on Saturday. The teams were level 1-1 at half time. Paul Cardozo provided the lead for Nerul SC in the 18th minute and within two minutes, Fr Agnelo S Club, Paroda restored parity through Moniz Oliveira. But in the second session, Nerul SC controlled the proceedings well and scored two more goals through Sagar Batkande and Gilmax Fernandes to win the match 3-1.

Ritviz in sole lead
PANAJI: At the end of the 5th round of play of All Goa State U-25 Open Chess championship, Ritviz Parab has taken the sole lead with 5 points. He beat Shane Braganca and Ameya Audi in the 4th and 5th round respectively. Niraj Saripalli is in the second position with the score of 4.5 points after winning against Shane Braganca in the 5th round. Ameya Audi, Saish Audi, Sharmad Bodke and Shreyash Arondekar are on 4 points. Sahil Shetty, Gajendra Kanekar, Ved Bhobe and Siddesh Marathe are on 3.5 points.

Candido strike puts St Anthony’s in quarters
MARGAO: A second half strike by centre forward Candido Vaz helped St Anthony’s SC, Colva to overcome Cuncolim Union by a solitary goal and move into the quarterfinals of Chinchinim-Deussua Panchayat Cup football tournament played at church grounds, Chinchinim on Saturday. The winner was scored in the 50th minute when Candido Vaz let go a powerful shot off a pass from Gerry Fernandes to beat the Cuncolim Union keeper Freyon Rodrigues.

Max Veterans in semis
PANAJI: In the inaugural match of 14th V M Salgaocar Memorial Veterans soccer tournament, Max Veterans, Colva registered a solitary goal victory over Quepem Veterans to enter the semifinals of the tournament organised by Prime Sports Club at St John the Baptist ground, Dando, Benaulim on Saturday. The winner was netted by Alfred Fernandes.

7-a-side football at Pomburpa
PANAJI: Pomburpa Boys will organise 4th All Goa 7-a-side football tournament at Opsa ground, Pomburpa on Sunday, August 24. Prizes – winners: Rs 15,000 and trophy; runners-up: Rs 10,000 and trophy; individual prizes.

3-a-side finals at Aquem
PANAJI: The phase 2 and finals of All Goa 3-a-side football tournament organised by St Sebastian Sports Club, Aquem-Alto, Margao will be held on Sunday, August 24 from 9.30 am onwards, at Adv Xaverito Coelho Grounds, near St Joseph High School, Aquem. Prizes – winners: Rs 12, 222; runners-up: Rs 6,666; third place: Rs 3,333. The phase 1 saw 42 teams from all over Goa compete in the tournament. Spot entries for those teams that missed out on previous Sundays are permitted.
