Navelim VU blank Calangute
MARGAO: Navelim Villagers Union blanked Calangute Association 3-0 to enter the quarterfinals of 2nd Mathany Saldanha football tournament, organised by Velcao Villagers Association at T B Cunha sports complex grounds, Cansaulim, on Wednesday. Bitu Singh provided the lead for Navelim in the ninth minute after he got hold of a pass from Alvito Colaco from the right flank and beat the Calangute Association keeper. Stanley Colaco then dribbled past two rival defenders and scored to put Navelim two goals ahead. In the second session, Alvito hit a hard shot that defelcted off a rival defender and entered the nets, 3-0.
Candolim roll past Milagres
MAPUSA: Candolim Sports Club managed to roll past Milagres Sports Club Mapuca 2-1 and enter the quarterfinals of the Saligao United Soccer Cup, organised by Saligao United at Dr Gustavo Monteiro grounds, Candolim, on Wednesday. Milagres colts caught the Candolim defence napping as skipper Casmiro D’Souza, getting hold to a cross from Shailesh Miskin, moved upfront and placed the ball past the helpless Candolim keeper Marshal Simoes, 1-0. On crossing over, Candolim levelled terms within five minutes of restart through Ryan D’Souza who scored from a goal mouth melee. In the 45th minute, Bapu Pednekar netted the match-winning goal as he guided a cross from Ryan into the far corner of the goal, beating keeper Manuel hands down, 2-1.
Saligao United advance
MAPUSA: Saligao United Sports Club advanced into the quarterfinals of the Nerul Soccer Cup 2015, organised by Nerul Sports Club with a one-goal win over Candolim Sports Club at Nerul grounds, on Tuesday. The all important goal for the Saligao side came in the 23rd minute through the boots of medio Trevor Dias.
Madkai YS beat Sparkling Stars
CANACONA: Madkai Yuvak Sangh progressed in the Division A cricket, after quelling the challenge of Sparkling Stars by six wickets. Sparkling Stars batted first to score 117 in 33 overs, A Talaulikar (33) and Mehraj Khan (13) being the main scorers. Saish Naik and Mayur Naik claimed three wickets each for the winners while Pritesh Naik claimed two wickets while Mahesh Raikar and Gautam Gawde chipped in with one wicket each. In reply, Madkai Yuvak Sangh reached the target in only 20 overs, scoring 120 for the loss of four wickets with Pritesh Naik and Amit Kolambkar scoring 41 and 24 not out, respectively. Nehal Surlekar of Saparkling Stars claimed two wickets, while Rajesh Naik and Parikshit Shetty claimed one wicket each.
Sushmita Jadhav picked in national U-14 football team
Sushmita Jadhav, a student of St Xavier’s High School, Moira has been selected to represent Indian under-14 girls national football team for the coming AFC Under-14 Girls Championship to be held in Kathmandu, Nepal.

GFA-GFDC educational seminar
PANAJI: The concluding session of the GFA-GFDC educational seminar for all active referees, new entrants and match commissioners will be held on April 19 at two venues – St Xavier’s College, Mapusa for participants from North Goa and Nehru Stadium, Fatorda, Margao for South Goa participants. The participants have to report at the respective venues at 8.15 am. It is compulsory for all to attend.
YUVA’s control cricket tourney
PANAJI: YUVA is organising Cricket Mahasangram 2015, an all Goa 9-a-side over-arm control cricket tournament, on May 10 and 17 at NGPDA ground, Mala in the city. Tournament is based on league system and entries are open for first 16 teams only. The matches will begin from 10 am from May 10. Trophies and cash prizes will be awarded.
