The word Samadhi literally translates to equanimity (sama) and ‘budhi’ or the intellect (dhi). The fundamental nature of the intellect is to discriminate – you are able to discriminate between a person and a tree only because your intellect is functioning. This discriminatory quality is very important for survival.

She could be easily termed as one of the best actresses on the Konkani stage, today.  Keziah Carvalho e Fernandes, originally from Vasco da Gama and now married in Tivim, is the daughter of Maria and Pascoal Carvalho.  Her dad was an amateur playwright and actor and it appears she inherited her talent her father. After her schooling in St Theresa’s High School Vasco, Keziah completed her graduation from Chowgule College Margao and went on to get a BEd degree from GVM College of Education, Ponda.

During school and college she sang and acted at annual gatherings organised by the Parish Youth of Our Lady of Candelaria Church, at Baina in Vasco da Gama.  She got her break in Reggie’s tiatr ‘Mangalsutra’.  This play which had professionals like Albert Cabral and Bab Andrew was staged in the parish.

She bagged the lead role in 2001 in director Sandeep Kalangutkar’s ‘Nissor’.  The director was so impressed with her, that plenty of changes were made in the script to showcase her talent.  The play went on to bag 12 awards and Keziah was adjudged best actress in her debut performance.  The following year she acted for the same group and bagged another award for ‘Noddnni’.

She continued acting for F D Cunha in ‘Morosor’ and later for Rafael Noel.  The professional break, however, came with Sharon Mazarello’s ‘Ekach Mapan’.  Soon, Roseferns cast her in ‘Eka Patkeak Lagon’, ‘Gorv’ and ‘Tum Assosor’ and she created quite a sensation with her power packed performances.  When Roseferns went on a tour with ‘Tumchea Moga Passot’ Keziah acted for the director in London, Germany and the Gulf countries.  She has sung for various audio discs, performed in Konkani VCDs and has directed one of the better Konkani telefilm ‘Orddem Chaddor’ written and produced by Augie D’Mello and Derrick D’Mello.  This is one actress who is equally good on stage as well

as films

At present, Keziah works in London.  On a holiday in Goa, Jr Reagan managed to cast her in his new play titled ‘Teddy Bear’, which has become a hit.  It was great to watch her act; she plays the main role with lots of style.

Keziah is grateful to God for the talent she is blessed with and to the audience for their support.  And she is extremely grateful to her husband, Sydney Fernandes and her father-in-law, Seby Fernandes for the immense encouragement and support she gets.  Sydney works for the Goa Police and it was obvious how proud he was of his wife.  When asked, whether he would allow Keziah to continue in dramas, he had a big smile on his face.  “We love the tiatr,” he said “and she can act for as long as she wants.”

Whoever said that a mother-in-law and daughter-in-law cannot live under the same roof in utmost peace and harmony? Do they need to bicker, argue and nag each other keeping a watchful lookout for possible follies from the other party?
