The eighth edition of Goa Arts and Literature festival (GALF) will be inaugurated on December 7 at Maquinez Palace Complex, Entertainment Society of Goa (ESG); Followed by the three-day programme that will be held at the International Centre of Goa (ICG), Dona Paula. In order to give literature lovers an experience of literature from across the globe, this year the eighth edition of GALF promises to bring some of the finest writers and artists from all across India and abroad including Brazil, Canada, Ireland, Singapore, UK, and the USA.
The inaugural function will see unveiling of official artwork of GALF 2017 prepared by well-known Goan artist Hanuman Kambli. The session will also include the launch of Goa-based Salil Chaturvedi’s ‘In the sanctuary of a poem’ and will conclude with tribute session dedication to late Eunice de Souza.
During the festival, acclaimed International authors, writers and poets such as Edwin Thumbo (Singapore); Gabriel Rosenstock (Ireland); Shelly Bhoil (Brazil); Sanjay Talreja (Canada); Prashant Jha (Nepal); Philip Browne and Mathew Staunton (UK); Willam Wolak, Nishi Chawla, Rafiq kathwari and Antonio Gomes (US) will make their presence at the festival. Also present will be regional language writers, poets and authors namely Moushumi Kandali (Assamese); Utpal Barauah (Assamiya); Prabodh Parikh (Gujarati); Chandan Gowda (Kannada); Shafi Shauq (Kashmiri and Urdu); Udaya Narayana Singh (Maithili); KR Meera and A Sethumadhavan (Malayalam); Ganesh Devy and Sachin C Ketkar (Marathi); Salma and Bama (Tamil) and Volga (Lalitha Popuri) (Telugu).
Co-founder and festival curator of GALF, Vivek Menezes said that since inception the unique home-grown and volunteer-driven festival has emerged as a great platform for literature enthusiasts. “There are several International delegates and participants attending the event this year. Books by acclaimed writers such as Salil Chaturvedi’s ‘In the sanctuary of a poem’, Janice Pariat’s ‘A nine chambered heart’, Tishani Doshi’s ‘Girls are coming out of the woods’, Pankaj Sekhsaria’s ‘Islands in Flux’, Teresa Albquereque’s ‘The Portuguese Impress’ and several other books will be released during the festival.”
He also mentioned that special tailored programmes for school and college students will be held. There will be a North Eastern pavilion for special session featuring art, culture and literature from the North-Eastern Region. Acclaimed authors, poets, journalists and artists that include Sahitya Akademi Award winners Ganesh Devy, Ramchandra Guha, Jerry Pinto and Ranjit Hoskote will also been seen at the lit fest.
“The event organised by ICG in association with Goa Writers with support from the North Eastern Council, Ministry of Development of North Eastern Region and Directorate of Art and Culture, Government of Goa, GALF is an attractive event that can promote tourism,” said co-curator, Damodar Mauzo while explaining that the event is a platform for newcomers and new voices to put forth their view to a larger audience.
