Down by a goal in the first half, Sao Jose de Areal made a strong come back in the second half through a brace of goals off Liston D’Costa to snatch a scintillating 2-1 win against Sporting Club of Davorlim and enter the quarterfinals of Curtorim Villagers Cup football tournament played at church grounds, Curtorim on Friday.
Both the teams started the match on a cautious note and playing a defensive game intialliy, there were hardly any worthwhile moves for the first 27 minutes of play, until Sporting Club of Davorlim shot into the lead in the 28th minute through striker Paxton Gomes.
Receiving a neat pass from the left off medio Robin Colaso, the Davorlim striker Paxton Gomes dodged two rival defenders and then on entering the box cooly placed the ball to the far end of Sao Jose de Areal nets, giving no chance at all to rival keeper Joseph Monteiro.
The proceedings were then played at a high pitch with both the teams going all out for the kill in the remainder of the first session.
After the change of ended, Sao Jose de Areal improved their match by a few notches and after stitching some smart moves, levelled the score through attacking medio Liston D’Costa in the 49th minute. Areal’s Liston D’Costa who was a constant threat to the rivals dodged a couple of Davorlim defenders on the right flank after he received a through ball off Araison Olivera and then shot angularly to beat Davorlim keeper Salito Miranda.
Goaded by the success, Sao Jose de Areal were all over the rival territory and dictated terms with fine positional play and excellent passing abilities.
Sao Jose de Areal who brought off tremendous pressure against Davorlim could have scored atleast two more goals, had their tries entered the nets.
Davorlim who were good in their defence, lost concentration in the 59th minute as they left Sao Jose de Areal’s striker Liston D’Costa free, who pounced on the chance and score a great goal, snatching a brilliant win for his team.
