A second half strike by striker Vinak Korgaonkar helped Chapora Yuva Sangh pip Nerul Sports Club 1-0 to crowned champions of North Goa Yaari Cup inter-village football tournament organised by Saligao United in the final held at Duler Stadium, Mapusa on Saturday.
Chapora Yuva Sangh dominated the proceedings and enjoyed the better ball possesion. They got their first chance in the 10th minute to break the deadlock when Maruthi Harijan and Samuel combined well and the later failed to beat the rival goalkeeper.
Chapora squandered it in the first half during the 15th minute when Rohan Kambli outwitted couple of defenders and his try sailed over the cross bar.
At the other end, Nerul Sports Club took their time to settle and once they struck the rhythm they came close in surging head in the 25th minute when Paul recieved the ball from his own half and his stiff shot was well saved by rival goalkeeper Sona Korgaonkar.
The second half was livelier as both the teams showed the urgency and played attacking football and Chapora scored the match winner midway of the second half when Vinak Korgaoonkar unleashed a volley craashed into the net
Stung by that setback, Nerul Sports Club went all out in search of an equaliser, but failed to pack a punch.
RDA Minister, Jayesh Salgaonkar was the chief guest who gave away the prizes in the presence of guest of honour Sushil Sharma, State Head Goa, Diageo India, and special invitess Welvin Menezes, Secretary GFA, Lavino Rebello, vice president of GFA (North Goa) and Denzil Franco, former international fooballer.
