PANAJI: Pilerne based, Kineco Kaman Composites India (KKCI), founded by Shekhar Sardessai, became the first private sector company in India to manufacture a dual helix antenna array (DHAA) assembly which was successfully launched into space on January 23, aboard ISRO’s fifth Indian Regional Navigation Satellite (IRNSS 1E).
It is an important milestone for the company, said Sardessai, on Thursday. “We are extremely jubilant and proud to be a part of ISRO’s IRNSS programme and contribute towards India’s self-reliance in space technologies. The company is committed to quest for excellence through continued investment in technology and human capital and in best practices in management and governance,” said Sardessai.
The DHAA assembly is a very complex and high precision structure made using a combination of carbon and aramid composites. The DHA is manufactured by Kineco for Vikram Sarabhai Space Centre VSSC, Trivandrum, as part of ISRO and integrated into the IRNSS -1E, which was successfully put into the orbit by PSLV –C31.
The team from VSSC worked very closely alongside the Kineco team to align the competencies required to manufacture such a critical system for the satellite. IRNSS is a cluster of seven satellites comprising of three geostationary and four geosynchronous satellites. IRNSS 1E is the fifth of the seven satellites to be launched which is equipped with DHAA manufactured by Kineco Kaman. ISRO has already launched four satellites (1A, 1B, 1C and 1D) successfully.
IRNSS will be the Indian version of the Global Positioning System (GPS) and will be called Standard Positioning Service (SPS). Once all the satellites are placed in orbit, which is expected to be by March 2016, free SPS services will be available to all the civilians and highly encrypted and restricted services will be available to authorized users, like military, said sources.
Kineco Kaman (KKCI) is a joint venture between Kineco Group, Goa and Kaman Aerospace, USA. The company was established in 2012 and it started operations in 2013.The company is focused in producing structural composite parts and assemblies for aerospace and defence industries. KKCI is currently working with International Aerospace Tier 1 companies, DRDO, ISRO and Indian PSUs.
