In a dramatic development, four-time Quepem MLA Chandrakant ‘Babu’ Kavlekar was elected as leader of the Congress Legislature Party (CLP) on Sunday by the elected legislators of the party, even as senior leaders of the party earlier failed to announce the result of secret ballot votes cast by the party’s legislators to elect its leader so as to stake claim for government formation.
All India Congress Committee General Secretary and Goa desk in-charge of the party Digvijay Singh declared that Kavlekar has been elected unanimously as the CLP leader.
In a press conference held in a city hotel on Sunday late evening, Singh made this announcement in the presence of senior leaders like Pratapsing Rane, Luzinho Faleiro, Ravi Naik, Subhash Shirodkar and others. The chairman of the screening committee of the party and central observer to Goa Venu Gopal and AICC secretary A Chella Kumar were also present.
Singh said that Kavlekar, who belongs to backward community, is a loyal Congressman and has always fought against communal forces. Expressing gratitude to all the legislators of the party for electing him as the CLP leader, Kavlekar said that he has always shouldered the responsibility given to him by the party for the last many years and as a loyal party worker he will try to do justice to his new responsibility.
While congratulating Kavlekar, outgoing leader of the opposition Pratapsing Rane said that he has performed well as party legislator and hoped that he will do justice to his position keeping everybody together, adding that all the party MLAs will cooperate him.
Faleiro said that Kavlekar, a leader from the Bahujan Samaj, is an able leader, who will perform well as the leader of opposition in the state assembly.
