Film: The Bounty Hunter, Cast: Gerard Butler, Jennifer Anniston, Directed by: Andy Tennant, Duration: 110 minutes, Rating: * *
A few years ago, director Andy Tennant gave us the likable romantic comedy Hitch. Before and after that film (barring Anna and the King in 1999) he has never made anything really worthwhile and The Bounty Hunter is certainly not a film to be proud of. The script is as lame as a dead dog and the only factor going for him is the two big names associated with the film – Gerard ‘300’ Butler and Jennifer ‘Friends’ Anniston. But then a popular actor doesn’t make a good film, in fact, it only tells you about how desperate actors can get to make some moolah.
Nicole (Anniston) is a news reporter who has committed a driving offence. Her ex-hubby Milo (Butler) is an ex-cop turned bounty hunter. As it has happened in several films (including Did you hear about the Morgan’s recently) fate brings them together on an adventure to rediscover their love. The only problem is they take about 110 minutes of your time to do that – much longer than you would care.
The ‘adventure’ is a run in with the bad guys who are drug dealers. It would be easy to mention the problems with The Bounty Hunter if they were just a few. To begin with, the writing is poor. Whether it is the romance or the adventure it falls flat on both counts. There is hardly any memorable scene or line at the end of the day, unless of course you find dodging golf balls very funny.
You feel sorry for the actors for taking up a project like this – they should have stayed away. The only saving grace is Christine Baranski in a cameo. There will always be a few people in the audience that will laugh at something that isn’t funny at all. Since you can’t see their faces in the darkness, you can only hope that their IQ is progressing according to their age.
