‘MAIM, What is this?’
Anifa Productions have released a new tiatr titled ‘Maim, What is this’, written and directed by Anil Kumar. The play depicts the selfishness and cruelty of man inflicted against woman and also highlights that sometimes the greatest enemy of woman is another woman.
Vallabh alias Vicky is a rich businessman. He is also a womaniser, enticing young girls with expensive gifts and a promise of marriage, although he is married and has children from another woman. Tanya is a widow with a son and young daughter. Her daughter Sophia, falls in love with Vicky, marries Bosco but continues to have an affair with Vicky. When she wants to end the affair, the mother will not hear of it. The girl then takes a drastic decision.
The narrative of the play has some good dialogues and moves at a good pace, with flashbacks that are executed well. Nancy plays the young Sophia. Acts well but at times, tends to scream. Fatima as the widow, does justice to the role. Angela is the maid while Sonia and Natty play the leaders of women’s organisations. Michael Gracias does a fine act of the eccentric Vicky, sometimes cool, sometimes ill-tempered and evil. Kiran is cast well as the son-in-law, Bosco. Anil Kumar is Vicky’s advisor, George is the upright and tough investigating police officer and Cynette plays the CID Inspector. Victor is the victim’s brother and Socorro de Sta Cruz, the doctor. Michael, Jose de Velim, Gaby and Sanjay Kalangutkar provide the humour. Sanjay, playing the Marathi speaking cop is particularly good.
Dhananjay provides the lights and background music. Backing the various songs are selected musicians. George renders the introductory song and in between the acts there are solos, duets and trios from Sonia, Angela, Fatima, Nancy, George, Socorro de Sta Cruz, Osvi Viegas, Michael Gracias and Comedian Michael. Special mention has to be made of solos by Victor, Anil Kumar and Francis.
