Swati Naik, Cosmo Fernandes bag Yuva Chitanya Puraskar

The third edition of the Goa Konkani Academi’s literary and service (seva) awards for the best book written by any Konkani writer in short story, essay, poetry, research, drama and children’s literature categories have been announced. These awards have been divided into two categories- Konkani Sahitya Puraskar and Konkani bhaxea Seva Puraskar.

The said information was given at a press conference chaired by the vice-president of Goa Konkani Akademi, Mr Vincy Quadros.
“The best literary work in short story, poetry, drama, essay and research carries a cash prize of ` 10,000 each and ` 5,000 for children’s literature. Books published between 2007 to December, 2009 were considered for the literary awards,” Mr Quadros informs.
A committee of three members for each form of writing was constituted to select the books published between 2007 to 2009 for the awards of 2010-2011. The respective committees have declared the following winners in their respective literary form.
Mangala Karapurkar won the award for her poetry collection ‘Utsav’, where as, in the short story novel category, professor Hanumant Chopdekar’s ‘Kuvaddi’, a collection of one act was selected as the best play book for the year 2007 to 2009.
In the best essay category, John M Alfonso won the award for his book ‘Jinnechi Vatt’. The research, science award went to Mr Shridhar Barve who wrote and published a research book on the scientific methods to play the tabla. ‘Tabla’ has been selected as the best scientific writing for the year 2007-2009. In the children’s literature section, Ratnamala Divkar’s book ‘Girmitt’ bagged the award.
The Konkani Bhaxea Seva Puraksar awards were also announced. The Yuva Chitanya Puraskar was given to two young Konkani activists. Each award carries a cash prize of `
15,000. This year Ms Swati Naik and Mr Cosmo Fernandes were chosen for these awards.
The Sahitya Pratibha Puraksar is a literary award given to an outstanding and established Konkani writer in the field of Konkani literature and who is above 50 years of age. This year, the noted Konkani poet, Mr Ramesh Velukar bagged this prestigious literary award known as ‘Sahitya Pratibha Puraskar’. The award carries a purse of `
 25,000 and a citation.
The Sahitya Pradnya Puraskar, an award instituted to be given to a person has worked in the field of research, dictionary, education and translation went to Dr Tanaji Halarnkar, editor of Vishwakosh.
The Shenoi Goembab Konkani bhaxea Seva Puraskar, an award instituted in memory of Xennoi Goembab, the patriarch of Konkani language and given to a senior Goan Konkani activist went to Suhas Dalal.
The Madhav Majunath Shanbhag Konkani bhaxea Seva Puraskar to be awarded to any well known Konkani activist working for the cause of the language from outside the state i.e. from Karwar to Cochi- in Kerala or any part of India was conferred on Purushottam Mallya from Cochi-Kerela. The award carries cash of Rupees 25,000 and a citation.
The Konkani Seva Sautha Puraskar, an award given to an institution or organisation working in the field of Konkani language was awarded to the Bardez Konkani Asmitai Kendra, Mapusa.
All these four awards were selected by a committee comprising Adv Uday Bhembre who headed the panel and other members who include, Naguesh Karmali, Pandurang Phaldessai and Fr Mausino Ataide.
