Art Chamber, Calangute is hosting an exhibition of Sohela Dabiri, a young Iranian woman, exactly on the day, which is incidentally the Equinox, celebrated in Iranas the New Year.
Sohela grew up and was educated in Germany. The intense quality of her art follows no known school or stream of art. Her works are a spontaneous and powerful expression with expressive and intriguing details drafted with pen.
Having dropped out of Hannover FH School, the prestigious school of art, even after being awarded several prizes and commendations, Sohela stopped drawing and came on a visit to Indiain search of spiritual knowledge. Here she came in contact with the ancient knowledge, cultures, yoga, tribal wisdoms, etc. Her foray into the ancient healing practices like reiki revived her spirit and enthusiasm to begin drawing once again.
Sohela draws inspiration from the images and forms from ancient spiritual techniques which include Shamanic themes as well. Sohela says: ‘The life forms and creatures that emerge are a spontaneous emanation of life; I see them as benevolent creations from life and inner worlds. In fact I do not name the picture until after it is finished, and then there is comprehension. Rather than creating something I feel as if it is channelled from deep within me.’
A beautiful drawing of goddess Kali displays power and strength of not just the subject but of Sohela’s draftsmanship. Quantum Physics, the nature of matter, energy, life cells and other such issues revealing the layers of reality and innumerable possibilities inspire her.
Sohela uses circles to depict matter and energy at subatomic levels as well as life cells.
Sohela intends to have art performances in the near future. She resides in Goaand the current show is on at the above mentioned art gallery.
