This Sunday the people of Goa were treated to an enrapturing jugalbandi of two mellifluous voices – that of Arti Ankalikar Tikekar and Devki Pandit. The show titled Swar Varsha, organized by the Inner Wheel Club of Mapusa and managed by the Swastik unit, was held at the Dinananth Mangeshkar Hall, Kala Academy.
The event was held to help the cause TIES (Towards Inclusion Everywhere in Society) a society of parents with disabled children.
“Citizens have social responsibilities along with individual responsibilities. We should not only think of saving water or the environment, we should also respond to the cause of those that need help like the children of TIES,” Arti Ankalikar had said at a press conference held in the city earlier.
The evening began with raag ‘Madhuvanti’, an evening raag, a composition that envisages a romantic situation between Lord Krishna and Radha. The duo initially executed ‘khayal’ (a slow classical form) and later performed ‘Drut’ (a fast classical form) with the same raag.
Arti Ankalikar Tikekar and Devki Pandit are disciples of the same gurus - disciples of Late Pandit Vasantrao Kulkarni of the Agra Gwalior and Gana Saraswati Kishori Amonkar of the Jaipur Atrauli gharanas - and the harmonious blend of the two voices singing in tandem was proof of this fact. The two have also sung together for an album
‘Malhar Ke Prakaar’ based on the raag tanariri
This was followed a devotional song in light classical music genre composed by Kishori Amonkar. The also performed the Marathi song ‘Bolava Vithala’.
Keeping with the mood of the light classical music they sang the raag ‘Malhhar’, which is apt for the monsoons.
The light classical piece of a ‘Chaiti form’, one of the forms of Thumri, was also executed. The event concluded with the devotional song ‘Avagha Rang Ek Jhalaa’ in raag Bahiravi.
The spontaneity of the duo held the audience captive right through till the end.
TIES (Towards Inclusion Everywhere in Society), a society of parents of disabled children gave a presentation at the start of the function.
