Film: Shrek Forever After, Voices of: Mike Myers, Eddie Murphy, Cameron Diaz, Directed by: Mike Mitchell, Duration: 93 minutes, Rating: * * *
Almost a decade after he made his debut, the lovable Ogre is all set to call it a day, as the fourth instalment of Shrek is also meant to be his last. While the first part was the best, the second and third had enough fodder to entertain families. The same can be said about this one as well.
One wife and three kids later, Shrek (voice of Mike Myers) is tired of his mundane life. He looks back at his past with nostalgia and is longing for some kind of change and excitement in his life – it doesn’t please him that no one is afraid of him as an ogre anymore. He gets a chance to change all of it when he meets Rumplestiltskin (Walt Dohn), also known as R, a man who specialises in making shady contracts. He lures Shrek into signing a contract that will grant his wish but at the same time threaten his very existence. From there the story kinda moves into the back-to-the-future mould.
Shrek is held captive by R but the known characters from the franchise like the Donkey (Eddie Murphy), Puss (Antonio Banderas) and Fiona (Cameron Diaz) start coming into the picture. His to-be wife doesn’t quite recognize him and Shrek has a tough time convincing her that he is the panacea for all the prevailing ills. The pied piper and Pinocchio are other characters who make a brief appearance.
There aren’t too many memorable jokes yet it is a smooth ride. All in all, Shrek says goodbye on a pretty entertaining note.
