On May 23, the children’s book club, Pageturners Club, was launched at the International Centre Goa, Dona Paula. In addition, a two-day workshop was held to generate reading interest among children.
This attempt was a first of its kind made by educationist, Ms Jugneeta Sudan.
The first day of the workshop began with a presentation and discussion of the books of British author, Roald Dahl. Every session was made interactive so the children could better understand the books. For two days, the club reviewed a total of 21 books of the author through power-point presentations.
A total of 41 children between the ages of 8-14 years participated in the workshop. The interest showed by them during the reading sessions was commendable, said Ms Sudan. The children sat in complete silence completely engrossed in their books, she added.
The movie, ‘Charlie and the chocolate factory’ was screened based on Roald Dahl’s book of the same name. This was followed with a discussion to point out the differences noted in the movie and the book.
On the second day, the movie ‘Fantastic Mr Fox’ was screened again based on the British author’s books by the same name. One of the children present had in possession an encyclopaedia on the author, who then proceeded to share her knowledge with the group.
The workshop also taught the students the creative side of writing diaries and sketching of favourite characters illustrated in the book by Quentim Black. Their knowledge over vocabulary building and synonyms was enhanced during the session.
A critical discussion then followed on the attentiveness of children towards reading books.
Ms Sudan surprised over the desired outcome decided to put her personal comment on the poster at the end of the workshop. She said it was much too easy to handle the children as they were attentive at every session. Their final works will be displayed on the posters at the centre.
Ms Sudan plans to organise such workshops for the adults as well. The theme for this would be Vikram Seth’s third novel, ‘An equal music’.
