The Dhempe college of Arts and Science, Miramar, established in the year 1962, recently celebrated its Founder’s Day at Club Tennis de Gasper Dias, Miramar jointly with the Goa University, which has completed 25 years.
The principal of the college, Dr Shrikant V Deshpande expressed gratitude to the teaching staffs and managing body for their collaborative effort in helping the college get accredited with an ‘A’ grade.
Chief guest, Dr Satish Shetye said that education was the best gift one could receive from an institute. It is rightly said only education can get bring us out from the scourge of poverty.
He praised the Dempo trustees for their goodwill towards the institute. A large number of children don’t avail of educational facilities said Dr Shetye adding that an institute has to focus both on quality and quantity. “I am proud to be an alumnus of the institute and I look forward to the growth of this college,” he stated.
The keynote speaker, Dr D Y Patil appreciated the founder of the institute. Teaching can transform society was the opinion of the Guest of Honour, Dr Uday Salunkhe. Education changes with time, he said, adding that the teachers and principals have to play a larger role to help create future leaders.
A symposium titled ‘Innovations in Education’ was also held. Through a power point presentation Dr Patil highlighted the areas of concern and the problem of shortage of trained non-graduate professionals. He said that approximately 15 million trained man power was needed in the construction sector while 5 million would be needed in specialised sectors in the next five years. India has manpower a shortage of 70 million in the manufacturing sector. He put the onus for the shortage of quality manpower on outdated curriculum, acute shortage of quality teachers and poor infrastructure.
Dr Salunkhe, who has successfully ventured into e-business, retail programme and has set up the first wireless campus in India, sharing his thoughts with the audience said that the faculty should be exposed to the best resources available to get better a outcome in the teaching field. Teachers should be inquisitive, do more research and thirst for knowledge found beyond what textbooks provide. Dr Salunkhe also suggested industrial and international exposure for students to gain a better understanding of the subject.
The Chief Guest for the symposium was Dr P V Desai who said that knowledge should be obtained from research. Education should be based on the requirement of the society he felt adding that studies could be made simpler by relating to various experiences.
