Dance, a catalyst for change

Havelock Ellis in his book “Dance is Life” has said, of all the arts, dance is the greatest and the most beautiful because it moves one’s heart because, it is not a reflection of life but life itself.
This is what founder of Nritya Sankul, Sachika Almeida and her senior students believe firmly in.

Dance being an integral part of their lives, they are all geared up for an unique show titled ‘Sajeevani’ in aid of Nritya Sankul and the National Association for the Blind, Santa Cruz Goa. There will be performances by the visually impaired, mentally challenged, super seniors and a ballet on ‘Muruge’ by Soundarya Natya Kala Laya, Mumbai on October 3 at 10.30 a.m.
Senior student, Mitasha Desai points out that dance is joy and what better joy could one derive than by helping children of a lesser god enjoy themselves by getting them to join mainstream society. Dance has completely changed her perception about life she avers.
Vaishnari Salelkar, an Engineering student, who had performed `Arpan’, a solo program in aid of mentally challenged, feels `Sanjeevani’ is special because the unique bonding between all her guru bhaginis has added a fourth dimension to the programme.
Pooja Madkaikar is a first year law student and assists Sachika Almeida in teaching. She feels that dance completes her life and there could be no existence without it.
For the other students who will be performing like Aparna Tileji, Abha Upadhya, Maitroye Mordekar and Sanika Kulkarni dance is self discovery and being one with the creator.
All the dancers are ready to give the best for the show since the joy of living is the joy of giving, hence the title Sanjeevani. Dance is a catalyst for change. It is redeeming and transforming. And this very perception is a very special faculty of the human mind. On a higher plane it merges with happiness. A better person and a better society result by the promotion of the arts. Nritya Sankul is trying to empower everyone through the medium of dance. Through reaching out to every section of society it is trying to illuminate the dance within, be it special children, the visually and hearing impaired, women who have passed them prime, tiny tots between the age of 4 and 6, street children, AIDS patients or the normal children. Dance is nothing by ‘Satyam, Shivam, Sundaram’ – Truth, Goodness Beauty - which are essential prerequisites for good soulful living, concludes Sachika Almeida.
(The charity show Sanjeevani will be held on October 3 at the Ravindra Bhavan (Margao) at 10.30 a.m. The passes will be available at the venue)
