Curbing climate change

It takes only a step to start a journey of a thousand miles. Similarly, if we come together and work towards a global cause then we can be sure to see wondrous results and the one change that needs to be addressed with utmost concern is climate change.

Taking a cue from here, around 50 individuals will work at various places and organise events to highlight environment issues on October 10, 2010 in an event that is being celebrated as ‘10/10/10 Global Work Party’.

Speaking at a press briefing at Kala Academy, environmentalist, Mr Clinton Vaz stated that these initiatives will be taken up by various individuals and groups with zero monetary funds. “The world is concerned about climate change. On October 10, we in Goa will arrive at climate solutions along with over 1 million citizens of the world. Over 7,000 events are expected to take place in 186 countries for the 10/10/10 Global Work Party, the single largest day of carbon-cutting action in the planet's history. The day event is being organised by 350.org in partnership with organizations around the world” adds Mr Vaz.

These events will be held from October 8-10 at various locations in Goa. On October 8, volunteers of Mission Green will conduct a bird watching event at Chorao Island along with Goa Forest Department where they will be also speaking about mangroves.

On October 9, the a leading lights manufacturers will give a 15-17 per cent discount on CFL lighting products at all stores in Goa.

The other events include awareness walks, movie screenings, cleanup drives, trekking, at Benaulim, Margao, Ponda, Vasco, Bogmalo, Sancoale, Panaji, Sangolda, Calangute, Chorao, Saligao and Bicholim.

The main highlight is the collection of e-waste in Goa that will kick start from October 10. “It is for the first time in Goa that an e-waste collection drive is being held at five locations in Goa—Panaji, Verna, Saligao, Mapusa and Bicholim. This is being done in collaboration with Attero Company. They will collect e-waste such as computers, laptops, printers, mobile phones, PCB and other electronic waste. It will be then sent for recycling after extracting all metals from it” informs Mr Vaz.

The other focus of the event is the street play that will be performed by a Delhi based NGO, Manzil.

At Calangute there will be a photo walk where participants will be encouraged to click pictures that depict climate change. The best three pictures will be then selected and published in newspapers.

In Panaji, there will be a beach clean up drive at Miramar and street plays in the evening which will be then followed by movie screenings at Gallery Gitanjali, Fontainhas, Panaji.

BITS Pilani Complex is having cleanup drive and tree plantation at their campus and the village of Assolna will have a village cleanup drive and door to door collection of plastic.
