Issue of subletting of shops to ‘outsiders’ rocks Betalbatim gram sabha

Betalbatim: The gram sabha of Betalbatim on Sunday discussed the issue of outsiders in the village and the practice of residents subletting their shops. It also decided to form a special committee to work along with the panchayat for renaming roads in the village after prominent personalities.

The issue of outsiders running businesses in the village had cropped up last month.

Gram sabha members noted that village vendors were either subletting their shops or giving them on contract without doing any check on the activities that go on.

“From the panchayat’s side, we don’t give NoCs to any outsiders in the village. But the villagers like in most parts of the state give shops to outsiders to run. We have decided to talk to local vendors and convince them not to sublet or give their shops to outsiders for which we will be starting an awareness drive,” said village sarpanch Constacio Miranda.

The gram sabha also resolved to rename roads in each ward of the village after prominent personalities from the area. For this purpose, the gram sabha will form a special committee to take up ward-wise consultations and finalise the names of the personalities. Miranda said that a special meeting would be called to form the committee.

Villagers were also informed by the panchayat of the pending status of the football ground repair and maintenance work and that a follow up over the issue will be done with the South Goa Collector.

“The work of the football ground was taken up under the MPLAD funds and was given to M/s Kerkar Construction but the activities have since been held up. We had recently held an inspection along with the local MLA, club members and PWD officials and will be writing to the Collector to do a follow up on the issue. Many of our tournaments and school activities have been kept on hold because of this delay in completing the work,” said Miranda.

A follow up on several water resources development (WRD) works that are pending including de-silting of water bodies for want of funds will be done, Miranda informed.
