Vikat Bhagat, the suspect in the murder of Irish woman Danielle McLaughlin, whose body was found lying nude in a field at Devbag in Canacona, has confessed to having killed the foreigner by inflicting wounds on her face with a blunt object, possibly a broken beer bottle.

Deputy Superintendent of Police and Sub Divisional Police Officer Quepem Sammy Tavares Wednesday said that after being subjected to rigorous interrogation, Bhagat confessed to having committed the murder. Bhagat was arrested by the Canacona police on Tuesday.

Tavares said that Bhagat was produced before Judicial Magistrate First Class, Canacona on Wednesday and the court remanded him to seven-day police  custody pending investigation into the case. He also said that Bhagat was sent for medical examination and some injury marks have been confirmed on his person. He, however, said that the case of whether there was sexual assault on the deceased would be clear once autopsy is conducted. Tavares said that a team of two doctors has been formed to conduct the post-mortem on the dead body and it is likely to be conducted on Thursday.

Tavares further said that the deceased’s garments, which were not found at the place where the body was found on Tuesday have been recovered after Bhagat led the police to the deceased’s bag, which Bhagat had kept at a place near his residence. When this reporter asked Tavares whether Bhagat knew Danielle, he answered in the positive and added that he was last seen with the Irish woman on March 13 at 9 pm.

Danielle’s body was discovered on Tuesday morning in a field across the Canacona-Agonda road at Dumanem on the way to Devbag. Tavares said that the foreigner was done to death at the same place where her body was found. Tavares said that police is investigating the case from all angles and added that the probe will reveal whether there were more culprits involved in the case.
