Industry: Parrikar was a true visionary

PANAJI: For Goan industry, Chief Minister Manohar Parrikar was a visionary whose contribution to the state is significant in industrial planning and policy. Unit owners said that they admired Parrikar’s ability to think of all aspects of an issue and come out with a solution to the problem. The invitation to outside industry to invest in the state, setting up educational institutes such as the IIT and NIT, promoting the state as an IT hub, building infrastructure, the third Mandovi Bridge, easing GST into the tax system, are some of the Chief Minister’s valuable contributions to the state, according to industry.

His role in getting the state in the center-stage as the Defence Minister is highly valued. Industrialists credit Parrikar for bringing Defence Expo to the state and boosting the Goa Shipyard as his important initiatives that played a major role in overcoming the initial hurdles that the local economy faced soon after his taking over as Chief Minister in

I think his contribution to infrastructure development has helped Goa tremendously. Right from the time of all important events, including the International Film Festival and the Lusofonia Games, all of it was his brainchild. Plus he came out with a lot of novel schemes for industry to benefit. He started ease of doing business and was the first to set up an investment promotion board in Goa. He came up with a couple of sales tax incentives in the last term which brought a lot of investment into the state. Industry will definitely miss him. He was a man of tremendous capabilities. He understood what industry needs,”

Shrinivas Dempo, Chairman of Dempo Group of Industries

Manohar Parrikar will be remembered as great son of Goa as well as a great visionary. Although CM, he lived a very simple lifestyle. He could grasp any subject very fast. He dedicated himself for all-round infrastructural development of Goa including express highway roads, bridges practically on all the rivers of Goa thereby helping to shorten travel time for the length and breadth of Goa. He helped towards the all-round betterment of the state for future generations. I pray God almighty to rest his soul in peace and also give strength to both the sons and their families to bear this big loss,”

Anil Counto, Industrialist

He was a visionary and an astute leader who selflessly held Goa and his country in high regard. Known for his impeccable record, decision making abilities and simple lifestyle, Parrikar was a leader always accessible to the industry. CII has worked closely with him both in the state and as the Raksha Mantri of the country. Industry will always miss his vision and foresight for development and growth. Goa has lost an incomparable personality, unparalleled leader, a man with great dedication to his work, a visionary and a motivator.”

Lalit Saraswat, Chairman of CII Goa State Council

We have lost a very proactive Chief Minister. And he is the first Chief Minister to start a process of consultation, especially pre-budget consultation with the trade. He was very approachable as far as any major issues were concerned. He has helped tourism in the times of crisis during 9/11 when he pumped in extra money for domestic promotions to salvage the situation. His passing way is a great loss for Goa because he managed a lot of things. Even now when our financial position is so bad he managed the finances. Like a true soldier he died with his boots on,”

Ralph De Souza, Chairman of De Souza Group

A true leader and a visionary who always carried Goa in his heart. He worked till his last breath in the service of the state and its people. The huge infrastructure projects including bridges, roads, stadiums and other utilities that he undertook will be his lasting legacy. As an office bearer of GCCI, I have had the opportunity of  working closely with him in the last couple of years and he always came across as a highly motivated and intelligent person who understood any matter that was taken up with him and always tried to find solutions to the satisfaction of all. We will miss an able administrator,”

Sandip Bhandare, GCCI president

Shocking to hear the sad demise of our beloved Chief Minister and the ex-Defence Minister. Very unfortunate for all of us as we have lost a very qualified, able, dedicated and much loved person. It is a great loss not only to the state but for the entire country. I pray for his great  soul to rest in eternal peace. May God grant enough strength to members of his family and all of us in Goa to bear the loss.”

Narayan Bandekar, industrialist and ex-president of GCCI

He is the architect of modern Goa and friend of small industry. The strongest defence minister India has ever had and a warrior who fought selflessly until his last breadth for a happy and vibrant Goa. It is a huge loss to Goa,”

Raj Kumar Kamat, president of Goa Small Industries Association

Impeccable integrity, rumpled shirt, chappals often carried his luggage, arriving in a rickshaw. Plain speaking fearless repeat winner in multi-religious counstuency. Four times CM of Goa a great son of India gone too soon,”

The Goa Pradesh Congress Committee deeply mourns the sad demise of Manohar Parrikar, the Chief Minister of Goa. Saddened by the death of a remarkable leader and a great politician, loved and respected by every Goan and Indian. Throughout his life, he has worked relentlessly for the betterment of Goa,”

Avertano Furtado, Former Navelim MLA

With the passing away of Parrikar, Goa has lost a politician who had changed the political discourse from the time he ascended into power. He showed the right intentions in the beginning though political pulls and pressures affected the direction of his governance. We parted ways on ideological differences, but still saw him as a buffer against the divisive designs of the party he belonged to. We pray that his soul rests in peace,”

Elvis Gomes, AAP Goa convenor
