2G scam: BJP takes a dig at PM, demands Chidambaram’s ouster

NEW DELHI: Taking a dig at Prime Minister Dr Manmohan Singh over the 2G spectrum case, the BJP Friday said if he says that the government was committed to zero tolerance against corruption then he should remove Home Minister Mr P Chidambaram from the Cabinet.

‘’Mr Chidambaram’s (then finance minister) complicity in the matter is very clear,’’ senior BJP leader Mr Murli Manohar Joshi told reporters here.
He said the Prime Minister should take action against officials of the Prime Minister’s Office and Law Ministry who were responsible for delay on Janata Party president Mr Subramanian Swamy’s plea against jailed former telecom minister A Raja.
Dr Joshi alleged that the whole Cabinet was responsible for the 2G scam and the huge loss and the Prime Minister owed an explanation to the nation why he kept ‘’silence’’ on the matter.
Dr Joshi, also the Public Accounts Committee (PAC) chairman, added that the committee had revealed all the irregularities in the spectrum licence allocation much earlier and the Supreme Court decision, cancelling 122 2G licences, had vindicated its observations.
The senior BJP leader said the PAC draft report was right on the 2G scam and had also recommended cancellation of the licences.
Slamming Union Telecom Minister Mr Kapil Sibal for bringing a ‘’zero loss’’ theory, he said the BJP and PAC had been claiming of huge loss to the exchequer due to the scam and the apex court has also said this.
While the Congress-led UPA government said it was following the NDA policy, the BJP leader said it was the fact that the policy was ‘’manipulated and misused’’ by this government.
‘’The Supreme Court has not cancelled any licence granted by the NDA. There was no irregularity in the NDA policy,’’ he said.
Dr Joshi added that Parliament would decide on the Joint Parliamentary Committee (JPC) on the 2G scam.
Asked about the ongoing stand-off between the government and Army chief General V K Singh, who has approached the Supreme Court over age row, he said the government should have sorted out the matter with the General.
‘’This is an another sign of ineffectiveness of the government,’’ he added.
The BJP leader said the Supreme Court had admitted an appeal filed by the Gujarat government challenging its Governor Ms Kamla Beniwal’s decision to ‘’unilaterally’’ appoint Justice (retd) Mr R A Mehta as the Lokayukta which showed that the state government’s facts were correct.
