SC entrusts all Bihar shelter home probes to CBI

NEW DELHI: The Supreme Court on Wednesday handed over the investigation into all the 17 cases of sexual abuse and exploitation of children at shelter homes in Bihar to the CBI. Handing over the investigation, the court said, “If the state government had done its job properly, the cases may not have gone to the CBI.” A bench of Justice Madan B Lokur, Justice S Abdul Nazeer and Justice Deepak Gupta directed the Bihar government to provide all the manpower, resources and logistical support to the Central Bureau of Investigation even as counsel for the state government made a last ditch bid to keep the investigation with the Bihar Police. 2 militants killed in J&K gunfight

SRINAGAR: Two militants were killed and three soldiers injured in a gunfight on Wednesday in Jammu and Kashmir’s Badgam district, police said. Security forces had started a cordon and search operation in Kuthpora village after receiving specific information about militant presence. As the search party was closing on the hiding militants they fired triggering an encounter. The identity of the slain militants were yet to be ascertained, a police officer said. Authorities have suspended mobile Internet services in Badgam and Pulwama districts. IANS

Bus from Nepal hits truck in UP, two die

LUCKNOW: Two persons were killed and two dozen injured in Uttar Pradesh’s Rampur district on Wednesday when a passenger bus coming from Nepal and headed to New Delhi was hit by a speeding truck, police said. The accident took place when one of the tyres of the truck burst. The driver lost control over the vehicle and it rammed into the bus. All the passengers in the bus were from Nepal. Due to the impact of the collision, half of the bus was smashed. The condition of five of the injured is stated to be critical. IANS

UP govt transfers 29 IPS, 14 PPS officials

LUCKNOW: The Uttar Pradesh government late on Tuesday rejigged the police department and transferred 29 Indian Police Service (IPS) and 14 Provincial Police officials, an official spokesman for the home department said. Om Prakash Singh, who was Superintendent of Police (SP) in Lalitpur, has been shifted to Jhansi as the Senior Superintendent of Police (SSP) while Mirza Manjar Beg has been shifted out of the CB-CID and named the new police chief of Lalitpur in Bundelkhand. Sunil Gupta, who was the SP (Law and Order) with the DGP headquarters in Lucknow has been named the new SSP of Gorakhpur, home of Chief Minister Yogi Adityanath. Poonam has been made the SP of Lakhimpur Kheri while Sunil Kumar Singh is the new district police chief of Rae Bareli, the parliamentary constituency of UPA chairperson Sonia Gandhi. IANS
