PANAJI: Concerned about violence against doctors by patients and their relatives, state unit of the Indian Medical Association (IMA) on Wednesday decided to set up a medical grievance cell for the locals so that they can file their complaints against doctors.
President of IMA Bicholim branch Dr Shekhar Salkar said that the proposed medical grievance cell is only related to the 1,500-odd doctors, who are the life members of IMA Goa unit. He said that the complaints will be heard only if they are related to these doctors.
Dr Salkar said that the terms and conditions and other procedures for the cell will soon be finalised and displayed on the official website of Goa IMA. The cell is expected to start functioning by the first week of January.
Dr Salkar said that IMA has taken a decision that the cell will be headed by Pramod Kamat, a retired district judge, who will act as the chairman. Six other members of the cell will include ex-public prosecutor Winny Coutinho, senior journalist Jyoti Dhond, executive director of Life Line NGO Ashfaq Sheikh, social activist Rajendra Kerkar, president of IMA Goa and secretary of IMA Goa.
The cell will operate from the IMA office located in Panaji and the local public can either approach the chairman of the cell or the IMA president with their grievances.
“The public can have full faith that all their complaints will be heard patiently and appropriate steps will be taken as per the recommendation of the medical grievance cell,” assured president of IMA Goa unit Dr Medha Salkar.
