Illegal mining: SIT registers FIR against ex-minister, ex-MLA

PANAJI: The Special Investigating Team (SIT) of the Goa police probing mining illegalities has booked two former legislators (former minister and another former MLA) in connection with an illegal mining case on Monday.
According to information, former minister Joaquim Alemao, former MLA Anil Salgaonkar and others have been booked under Section 4(1) (1-A), rule 37 of Mineral Concession Rules, 1960 r/w Section 21(1)(2) of Mines and Mineral (Development and Regulation) Act, 1957 and Section 2 r/w 3A of Forest (conservation) Act, 1980. It may be recalled that Prasanna Acharya, director of Mines and Geology, Panaji, had filed a complaint in August this year and the investigating team after conducting a preliminary inquiry into the case has registered an FIR on Monday.
According to the complainant, between the years 2006 and 2011, at Asni Donger, villages of Curdi and Curpem, Sanguem, accused persons namely Anil Salgaonkar, director of S Kantilal and Company Pvt Ltd, along with raising contractor Joaquim Alemao and others illegally extracted ore (details not known) without valid lease, forest clearance and other mandatory permissions thereby causing loss to the exchequer.
Police inspector Raul Parab is investigating the case under the supervision of SP Vijay Singh and DIG K K Vyas.
So far, SIT, which is investigating a number of cases pertaining to illegal mining, had arrested seven persons including former mines director Arvind Lolienkar. The SIT has also filed the charge sheet in connection with an illegal ore transportation case.
