Varun Carvalho is a dentist by profession but a musician at heart. Currently basking in the success of his debut album, ‘I Gotta Go Home’, Varun is excited at being selected to perform live at Croydon, London on July 25. ‘The Navhind Times’ caught up with him and discovered that his ultimate reward is to bring a smile on people’s faces.
Can you tell us more about your recently released debut album ‘I Gotta Go Home’?
‘I Gotta Go Home’ is a compilation of some of the best songs I’ve written over the years and in a way represents my musical journey. I have worked with some of the finest musicians in India to create a sound that is international and which at the same time retains its Indian soul. This international sound is precisely what got London-based music label AMI Records interested to sign me up. The album has been produced by Roy Menezes, who produced Euphoria’s (music band) first two hit albums. The album was mixed by renowned sound engineers San at Woodlands Studios in Singapore and was mastered at AMI Studios, London. The album traverses various genres of music and has that catchy melody which is the USP of the album.
In your album you have added a song titled, ‘The Goa Song’. Was it is a deliberate effort to speak about the issues related to Goa through a song?
I think every artist feels the pulse of the land he lives in. I like many other Goans am very disturbed at what is happening to our state. The Goa Song is a reflection of what I feel is happening to Goa and I hope the song rekindles the Goan essence in each one of us. I do hope the people of Goa come together and save what is left of our beautiful land and culture.
You are a dentist by profession. Is music a hobby or a passion with you?
I’m a dentist by profession and a musician by passion. To me, both dentistry and music are very fulfilling and my ultimate reward is when I can bring a smile to a person’s face either through my dental work or with my music.
You have now been invited to perform live at Croydon, London on July 25. How do you feel?
Yes, I am very proud and happy to have been invited to perform in London because it is an opportunity to promote Goan music internationally. I will be performing songs from my last album and also a couple of tracks from my forthcoming album.
Is it possible for an individual to make a career out of music in Goa?
I think whatever you do; you have to put your full heart into it. You can make a success and a career of whatever you choose to do, the same goes with music. Now that the international markets are open to World Music, the money will come, you just have to work hard and keep at it.
What are your future plans?
I will be shooting a music video in the US for the song, ‘Turn the Tide’ which will be premiered on VH1 later this year. I am also working on the music score for an American movie called ‘Mr Know All’. My new album is already in production and should be released in a few months.
