Life and times of Bakibab Borkar

PANAJI: Aami Goenkar, an association of Goans established with an aim to unite all Goans residing in and outside Goa, to create a common platform to interact and create solutions in the areas of health, education, social welfare and culture, will present in Goa four shows of a unique programme based on the life and times of the Goan poet, B B alias Bakibab Borkar titled ‘Jine Gangaughachen Panee’, in commemoration of the ongoing birth centenary year of the celebrated personality.

The president of Aami Goenkar, Mr Sanjay Hegde, addressing a press conference on Tuesday evening said that the first show of the particular programme was held at Mumbai on February 18, with noted Goan vocalist, Kishori Amonkar as the chief guest. “The opening show of ‘Jine Gangaughachen Panee’ in Goa will be held at Kala Academy on April 2, at 4.30 p.m., with the leader of the opposition, Mr Manohar Parrikar, as the chief guest,’ he added, pointing out that subsequent shows would be held at Navdurga temple hall, Bori on April 3; and Ravindra Bhavan, Margao and Gomant Vidya Niketan, Margao on April 4.

 ‘Jine Gangaughachen Panee’ will see Dr Aruna Dhere, Dr Salil Kulkarni, Dr Shyam Borkar, Mr Suhas Bahulkar, Ms Nisha Parasnis, Mr Suresh Bapat and Mr Sai Banker participating. The highlight of the programme will be the noted Goan stage artist/ singer, Pt Ramdas Kamat in the role of Ashwin Sheth, performing songs from the Konkani version of the Marathi stage musical, ‘Saunshay Kallol’ as translated by Bakibab Borkar.

Dr Aruna Dhere will present a critical appreciation on Bakibab’s poems, while Dr Salil Kulkarni will sing the poems of the celebrated Goan poet, as composed by him. The well-known artist, Suhas Bahulkar will draw spontaneous pictures, just as Dr Shyam Borkar, nephew of Bakibab will recite his uncle’s poems. These pictorial interpretations will be auctioned during the programme. The programme will also include screening of a recorded interview with Bakibab as conducted by the legendary figure, P L Deshpande, and another film, which will show the poet himself reciting his own poems. 

All the shows, staged in association with the Department of Art and Culture, will be open for general public. A book titled ‘Bakibab’, which is a collectors’ item, will be available for sale at the venues of the programme.

Mr Hedge also informed that Aami Goenkar has other projects in the pipeline including a medical team and medical helpline for helping Goans arriving in Mumbai for medical treatment, and a hostel for students moving to Mumbai for education.
