The summer of 2010 has already set in and with temperatures rising, it looks like the exam stress may have gone but the what-to-do-now bug has just been unleashed.
That apart, the sweltering heat is another reason why you would not want to stay at home but rather keep yourself busy so as not to be reminded of the hot summer days ahead.
Summer time can be double trouble often for parents who do not know how to keep the sometimes unruly yet energetic kids out of their routine!
Various academies and persons have already begun announcing classes and courses. These not only keep the students occupied but also help impart some kind of skills to them which will later prove useful in life.
Keeping in mind the need for such courses, the Alpha Mindz Trainers, Miramar are conducting Alpha Summer Workshop from April 5 to April 23. The activities that the students can learn are card making, hay craft, silver lining and aluminium art. There is also an opportunity for the children to get some artistic learning on the different facets of painting like sand painting.
The workshop will also teach home décor which comprises of stocking flowers, making door mats and lamp stands and broken bangle art. Participants can also avail of training in voice modulation where areas such as pitch, tone, diction, stories, promos, mimicry and karaoke singing will be taught.
Bookworm, the children’s library located at St Inez will be conducting a summer programme but this time it has got nothing to do with books. ‘Let’s cook’ a course that will teach children to cook and begins from April 5 to April 10. Children will be taught more about wealth from waste (April 26 to May 1), take away crafts (April 19 to April 24, creative writing (April 12 to April 17). These programmes will start from 9.30 in the morning and will go on to 12.30 in the afternoon.
For those wanting to go creative in the field of science, the Goa Science Centre, Miramar is organising a creative science workshops. The workshop will be divided into two batches with each batch given the option of learning something on three disciplines of science. The students have to choose anyone of those disciplines from each batch. Batch I which starts from April 15 to April 25 includes the disciplines of creative science, computers and multimedia and is ideal for students studying in class seven, eight, nine and ten. Second batch which will run from May 5 to May 15 will have the disciplines of electronics and aero modelling and is ideal for students studying in class eight, nine and ten.
The students will be involved in making projects related to science and will engage in learning the basics of the selected disciplines. The seats are limited to 15 per batch for each discipline. The workshop charges a normal course fee of Rs 100 for members and for others Rs 150 (Rs 50 for membership). This will start at 10.30 a.m. and will end for the day at 3.30 p.m. Admission will be based on first come first serve basis and the last date of enrolment is on April 10.
The Snaden Shawn dance and aerobics academy gives for both kids and adults an opportunity to learn different dance styles this summer. Learn to sway and move to hip-hop, bollywood, contemporary, salsa, jive, waltz, meringue and cha-cha. The classes will begin on April 6 at Don Bosco School, on April 2 at Sainik Hall, Defence Colony, Porvorim, on April 5 at Nilambari Hall, near cinema Alankar, Mapusa, on April 5 at Casa Angelica near St Anthony’s chapel, Calangute, and on April 6 at Club Gasper De Dias, Miramar.
There is something in store for the adventurous too. Beat this summer heat by doing something adrenalin pumping. Lemon Tree, Child Foundation school, Taleigao will be organising activities just for kids from April 7 to May 20. There are a total of 52 activities which includes rock climbing, repelling, river crossing, zumerring, trekking, Commando Bridge and much more. Their base camp set up will be close to Tambdi Surla in Sancoale.
Like every year, Don Bosco too have something in store for youngsters which includes wide range of programmes from dancing to sports, cooking to trekking…and a bunch of other exciting stuff.
So the summer may not be all that boring after all. Meet friends, learn something new, and be creative and thus you will make your holidays a great one. This is that time when you can add an extra skill to your portfolio. So get on to it.
