‘Beyond the Clouds’, the film directed by the Iranian filmmaker, Majid Majidi will be the opening film at the 48th edition of the International Film Festival of India, while the Indo-Argentinean film, ‘Thinking of Him’ directed by Pablo Cesar will be the closing film at the festival.
Majidi has stated that this is the second time he would be attending the mega film festival. “The first time it was a retrospective of my earlier films and now it’s because of ‘Beyond the Clouds’. I am very happy and curious to see the reactions of the audiences because this is the first time the film will be presented to Indian audiences,” the Iranian director has told the organisers of IFFI 2017.
‘Beyond the Clouds’ is a story of a brother and sister like the 1997 film of Majidi, ‘Children of Heaven’, with the difference being that the siblings are grown ups and tackle greater conflicts with the backdrop of the bustling city of Mumbai. The film is a vindication of Majidi’s firm view that human emotions have no barriers of language and geography.
Majidi, who has moved to India for the first time and made a film out of his country, describes the experience as “one waiting for years to happen”. ‘Beyond the Clouds’ is an extension of Majidi’s cinematic beliefs, the roots of which lie in human values, love, friendship and family bonding.
On the other hand, ‘Thinking of Him’ tells an intertwined story set both in the present and the past and is based on the bond shared by Rabindranath Tagore with Argentine feminist writer and cultural activist, Victoria Ocampo. The film stars Victor Banerjee, Eleonora Wexler, Hector Bordoni and Raima Sen.
Filmmaker, Pablo Cesar will present the world premiere of the film along with the star cast at the closing day of the festival on November 28, 2017.
Speaking about his film, Filmmaker, Cesar said, “My heart was conquered by IFFI in 1994 when I was invited to screen my third feature film. Now I am here with my eleventh film, happy and anxious. IFFI invites us to get excited with the World Premiere of this film.”
Meanwhile, Sunit Tandon, the festival director has stated that IFFI is delighted to host the India premiere of the well-loved Iranian film maker, Majid Majidi’s first ‘Made in India’ film.
“Majidi is known for his masterly cinema dealing with the touching human bonds that emerge in the midst of adversity and human suffering, he maintained, adding that ‘Beyond the Clouds’ continues this trajectory in an Indian setting, making it a reflection of the truly international outlook of this truly Indian film festival.”
