Science Congress workshop on Land Resources

The ministry of Science and Technology, Government of India, through the NCST wing in association with the State Science and Technology Council will play host to the 18th
Children Science Congress on September 3 at Goa Science Centre. Around 100 schools will be participating in this event.

The theme for the congress is ‘Land Resources: know your land’. The sub themes will be functions of land, land quality, anthropogenic activity on land and the sustainable use of land resources.
The chief scientist and the state coordinator of the event, Dr Joseph Rauto de Souza states
that the primary objective of the congress is to make a forum for children between 10 to
17 years, both from formal and non-formal school systems, so that they can exhibit their
creativity and talent through an innovative medium, to solve local, societal problems
using science.
The congress also hopes to prompt the children to think of significant societal problem
using science and ponder over its cause and subsequently try solving the same using a
scientific process and interventions says Dr Joseph.
This will involve close and keen observations, raising pertinent questions, building models, presenting solutions on the basis of the models, trying out various possible alternatives and arriving at optimum solutions through experimentation, field work, research and innovative ideas. The congress will also provide a platform to inculcate a sense of intellect through discovery as it emboldens the participants to question may aspects of science.
The resources mentors for the congress will be Sr faculty, Shree MARC, College of Arts and Commerce, Canacona, Dr F M Nadaf, lecturer, SFX, HSSC, Mapusa, Ms Margaret Dias, ex-agriculture officer, Mr Miguel Braganza who will be providing their expertise in the relevant fields.
Likewise, the teachers would be imbibed with an instinct and stimulus to undertake theme specific projects during the current year. A team comprising of six students will
be undertaking and implementing the project, which will be presented at a state
level workshop scheduled to be held in November. The students will have to defend their
project with other competing projects so as to qualify for the national level meet.
Mr Pravin Parab and Mr Sanjeev Chodankar will be the district coordinators while Mr Deepak Lucas and Dr Mohan will be supporting the event with their knowledge.
