When fresh new design talent comes into the industry there is an unconventional way of looking at the creative aspect of fashion.
Three designers making an impact with their style statements have proved that they are looking at fashion from an out of the box perspective than the more established designers. Meher Castelino takes a look
I KNOW by Timsy and Siddhartha
This men’s wear collection was not for the very shy male but one who can make a strong fashion statement with his clothes since the designs were very daring with many of the creations having massive cut outs. With recession receding into the past, designers Timsy and Siddhartha’s I KNOW label gave men’s wear a fresh look of finery with that touch of dandy direction. With interesting innovations and versatile touches the collection had a variety of options to interest the stronger sex. Giving an extreme look to the wardrobe for the Indian male, the label had slit rear pockets the skirt/trouser duo, bold cut outs for shirts, fake lapel waistcoats, buttoned low crotch pants and drop lapel jackets. The detailing was at times unconventional with pouch pockets hanging on slim trousers. The colour story was muted with black, white, brown playing a quiet medley for this very Avant garde look for the man who dares to dress differently.
Miriam Stehlau
From far away Freiburg in Germany, Miriam Strehlau’s love for fashion and the East started during the early years. Cutting, stitching and creating garments, this talented designer now based in Goa showed a line that was beautifully crafted and a delight to behold. It was a collection of vibrant street fashion that had marked earthy touches and influences which reflected Miriam’s fashion sensibilities. Cleverly using bandhani and batik for blanket, khadi, mul and cotton, Miriam created some great outfits with Indian sensibilities. There were long dresses with quilted jackets, baby doll minis, twinkling Raj dress with mirror work, besides trendy bomber jackets and lungi skirts with ruffled petticoats. The look was laid back, resort wear with colour, style and interesting detailing.
This was a very funky hippy relaxed line for women who want to mix and match and create their own style statement wherever they go.
Blank Spot by Shivaji Dutta
Minimise your waste and turn it into fashion was the message from Shivaji Dutta with his Blank Spot label. In shades of mustard, black and brown the unused fabrics with hints of leather gave the collection an innovative touch. Simple trousers, stylish skirts, smart shirts and jackets were designed into a practical and imaginative line. Turning the original garments into different ensembles Shivaji used the trousers, skirts, shirts and presented them as dresses with leather detailing in geometric shapes. The unused fabrics appeared to be a perfect medium for the various ensembles that were cleverly designed for eye catching women’s wear. “Do not waste” was an important message from Shivaji Dutta but with a fashionable twist. Very unusual with the look appearing in the form of a more grungy style the effect was very interesting on the ramp with hints of fabric and leather.
