A parish bound with music

By Priya Almeida
Music is one of those human activities that is noted for its ubiquity and antiquity and in tune with the same the St Sebastian Music School has been instituted. St Sebastian Music School is a part of Father James Torres Silva's ongoing effort to transform the parish of St Sebastian Church, Aquem.

Father James Torres Silva has made pioneering efforts that include the new St Sebastian Church Building and the peaceful ambience of the New Cemetery and the St Sebastian's (ICSE) School.
The focus of the St Sebastian Music School is to make learning of music fun as opposed to making it another boring academic subject.
It is here that young children are exposed to music of various hues by a gamut of sincere instructors who are established musicians and connoisseurs of various musical genres. Pop music is also used as a vehicle to expose children to the more serious forms of music as per the students needs.
Children learn through the mother tongue approach as we always learn to speak before we learn to read and write.
Children learn through audio visual aids, video concerts, group exercises and regular performances through which they learn co-operation and teamwork. This is what sets St Sebastian Music School in a league of its own, and perhaps this unique concept of teaching music has drawn a lot of interest from parents and students alike.
Adults also learn alongside children and parents are encouraged to learn music along with their children, which serves as a great bonding tool for parents and kids during the stormy adolescent years.  St Sebastian's Music School is also, in more ways than one, an instrument of social change.
The children of the school will perform for the first time just after 2 months of learning at the farewell program for Father James Torres Silva who has been instrumental in setting up of the music school and who will be leaving the Parish of St Sebastian, Aquem, on another mission on the August 1.
