Celebrating Goa’s art legacy

BY ARTI DAS | NT BUZZ
Goa and Goans are always celebrated world over for their artistic vision. Legendary names like Mario Miranda, Angelo Fonseca, F N Sousa to name a few have become part of world art.
So, now is the time to celebrate and the state government has taken a lead.

The Directorate of Art and Culture is organising a ground-breaking exhibition celebrating Goa’s ancient and richly confluent artistic legacy. This exhibition will be held tentatively on December 19 at Old Secretariat Building, Panaji.
But, before that there is a need for a lot of mind breaking exercise by bringing all artists together and bringing out their best. The state has now constituted a Curatorial Committee which hosts a series of open, inclusive and collaborative discussion forums led by artist, Apurva Kulkarni and others, to help, explain, outline and develop the themes and approaches that will define the inaugural exhibition.
“This exhibition is open to everyone who is creative and not just artists as such. This committee has been constituted to have this exhibition in order to celebrate 50 years of Goa’s Liberation. Thus, in order to reach international standards we need to have an art exhibition where we can present best in the forms of paintings, sculptors, photographs, illustrations, installation, video installation etc. It could be of any medium. It is primarily open to all Goan artists and also who are based in Goa and Goans settled outside” says Apurva Kulkarni who is part of this committee.
The committee hosts an open discussion on every Saturday from 3 to 6 p.m. at the newly opened Sanskruti Bhavan, Patto, Panaji.
“Through these discussions we are bringing all artists and other creative people together where we have presentation about their work. Also we put across our POV—Point Of View” adds Kulkarni.
In a few sessions held previously, they discussed the nature of beauty and the nature of creative art. “This Saturday we are discussing about how to be critical about art. Having a discussion about a piece of art and developing critical faculty” mentions Kulkarni.
Through these sessions they will also zero down on the theme that will in order honour Goa’s legacy on a larger creative platform.
