Holy Cross Chapel of St Joseph situated at Manxe Vaddo, Dongrim-Mandur, one of the oldest chapels in the Tiswadi Taluka, has been renovated and extended.
The inauguration of the renovated chapel has been scheduled on May 1 at 8.30 a.m. at the hands of Rev Dr Rosario Oliveira, Judicial Vicar of the Archdiocese of Goa and Daman in the presence of the parish priest Rev Fr Alex Fernandes and ex-parish priest of Mandur and present parish priest of the Carambolim Church, Rev Fr Conceicao D’Silva. May 1 being International Workers Day the chapel will be dedicated to St Joseph.
Two and a half years ago Fr Conceicao D’Silva had laid the foundation stone and taken the initiative to build a new chapel in honour of Holy Cross and St Joseph. He had to face many hurdles and difficulties in spite of which he succeed in completing the work the full support of the committee, the present parish priest, Rev Fr Alex Fernandes and Mr Henry Pereira. The huge cross build on one single laterite stone is said to be one of two to three crosses of this type in the whole Archdiocese of Goa and Daman.
This cross was brought from Old Goa by the ancestors of Mandur who had built a small chapel. The cross is more than 200-year-old.
The chapel has been extended to facilitate the accommodation of the faithful for better participation in the liturgical acts and to preserve the interiors of the chapel. Speaking on the renovation works the president of the chapel, Mr John Po praised the architect, Mr Jim Manjooran for designing the chapel and the contractor Mr Agustine Vaz.
The whole committee and people of Manxe Vaddo are extremely grateful to the former parish priest Fr Conceicao D’Silva worked hard to collect funds. The present parish priest Fr Alex Fernandes was extremely co-operative and supportive of Fr Conceicao. Mr John Po said that utmost care had been taken to preserve the original architecture and statues of this centuries-old chapel.
