Income tax (I-T) officials on Wednesday raided the office and residence of a Porvorim-based advocate Agnelo Lobo for suspected tax evasion.
It is learnt that the raid actually commenced on Tuesday and continued till late Wednesday evening when it was yet to end.
A senior official said that inquiries have been initiated against the lawyer in connection with tax evasion. “With investigations going on, we are yet to put a figure on the evasion,” he said. The raid was not a part of election monitoring, he emphasised.
Lobo was the attorney of Serula comunidade and was recently issued a show-cause notice for his failure to protect the comunidade land. He had granted a no-objection certificate to a private party for mutation of 39,000 square metres of land.
The Serula comunidade scam case is valued over several crores of rupees and is currently under inquiry.
Meanwhile, the raid on Lobo was conducted by investigative directorate of income tax department, Panaji, which deals in suspected cases of undisclosed income or black money.
In 2017-18, the income tax department in the state detected Rs 158 crore of undisclosed income through spot checks and surveys on residents.
