Hooliganism in Name of Gau Raksha

SAMIR KHAN, Mapusa

CASES of hooliganism in the name of Gau Rakshaks are increasing day by day. Recently a man belonging to the minority community was lynched to death and five others mercilessly beaten by cow vigilantes in Rajasthan’s Alwar district. The victim’s family has claimed that they had the legal documents for transporting the cattle for farming purpose and there was nothing illegal in it. Here, the question of whether the cattle were carried legally or illegally doesn’t arise as nobody has the right to take law in their own hands or cross-check people. It is the duty of the police to investigate and take necessary action. It seems, post BJP’s parliamentary victory has emboldened these hooligans who at the drop of a hat don’t hesitate to unleash terror on minorities and dalits in the garb of cow vigilantism. Incidences of flogging of dalits in Una, hanging of two people in Uttar Pradesh and Muhammad Aklaqs lynching incident in Dadri is still fresh in people’s mind. Last year, the Prime Minister Narendra Modi had condemned cow vigilantism and had said that these so-called “Gau Rakshaks” are anti-social elements and do anti-social activities at night and call themselves “Gau Rakshaks” in the day time. And that such violence won’t go unchecked. The question is why are these so-called Gau Rakshaks not arrested and punished? Why has the state government not taken prime minister’s rebuke seriously? Or have they taken Prime Minister’s censure as mere lip service with no value and respect for his words? Why are the police and state government not showing alacrity in arresting and punishing those found guilty and dealing with them with an iron hand and giving a strong message to the culprits in particular and to the people in general that, no one is above the law and that the perpetrators of any such crime won’t go scot-free? For some, ban on cow slaughter is a matter of faith but it is definitely not for the BJP. If it was, then they wouldn’t have promised to the people of north eastern states that if voted to power then they won’t ban cow slaughter. Similarly it would have banned cow slaughter in Kerala and Goa also. What matters to them is power and not faith. People should analyse and understand BJP’s hypocrisy on cow.
