Government to notify Curtorim as biodiversity heritage site

MARGAO: The member secretary of the Goa State Biodiversity Board Pradip Sarmokadam on Saturday said that within the next fifteen days, the state government will notify Curtorim as a biodiversity heritage site (BHS).

Speaking to ‘The Navhind Times’, Sarmokadam said, “We are waiting for the notification. The draft notification copy has been sent to the village biodiversity committee chairman J Santano Rodrigues for verifying the information.  The whole process has taken about two years. A 12-member committee was formed and a report was prepared with technical support from Chowgule College students. The document has been prepared incorporating social, religious, historic and environment aspects. The plan was kept open for suggestions, inclusion and deletion for almost 60 days.”

He said that once the village is tagged as a biodiversity heritage site, the village will get an additional layer of protection.

“By virtue of being a biodiversity heritage site, the village will have a protection and the land cannot be converted. There would be some kind of monitoring by the Goa State Biodiversity Board, besides  providing financial support,” he said.

He stated that the traditional activities such as farming, fishing will not be hampered or disturbed once the village is declared as a heritage site.

He also informed that the existing land use as wetlands, agro-pisciculture will be maintained, also integrity of ecosystem will be ensured. According to the draft notification, there are six lakes in the village, besides 11 springs.

The chairman of the village biodiversity committee Rodrigues thanked the communidade of Curtorim, tenant associations, the two-member team, technical support team, local legislator and the villagers for their support and contribution towards the biodiversity heritage site
