PANAJI: The government of Goa through sports secretary J Ashok Kumar has intimated to Indian Olympic Association (IOA) through an email that Goa would be adding five more disciplines requested to the 36th National Games to be hosted by Goa in 2019.
Goa had agreed to host 32 disciplines but after request by IOA to add five more – Wushu, Billiards and Snooker, Lawn Bowls Rugby and Modern Penthatlon – the hosts agreed to add only two more disciplines.
However, the IOA had sent a two member Games Technical Conduct Committee (GTCC) committee of Ashok Kumar and SM Balli on August 8, to convince Goa to add five more disciplines.
Sports secretary Ashok Kumar had in an interview to The Navhind Times (see NT dated 10/8/2018), had stated that Goa had decided to relent and host the five disciplines requested by IOA with certain caveats.
“The state government has decided to honour the request of the IOA to accommodate all the five additional requested disciplines. However, the discipline of Modern Penthathlon shall not include events of equestrian, as the State has no suitable infrastructure at present in place for the same.” The government email to IOA stated.
“I think it is time no to focus primarily on organising the games now that we have received the email from the government. I think everything is going in a smooth way and there is no issue whatsoever with Goa,” IOA secretary general Rajeev Mehta told The Navhind Times over the phone from New Delhi.
“Equestrian will not be added as requested by Goa,” added Rajeev.
