Workshop on climate change held at Canacona

POINGUINNIM: Global warming and climate change have become a serious problem in recent times, efforts to reduce energy consumption by harvesting energy from wind, waves, sun, etc, has been a priority.

Likewise, carbon trading, reducing impacts of vehicular usage, improvisation of domestic and industrial waste etc are of prime concern towards mitigation of global warming scenario.

Considering the importance and significance of the problem and the likely impact on the globe and part of action plan for combating climate change, an in depth taluka level capacity building and awareness workshop on ‘Global Climate Change’ was held at Shree Mallikarjun College of Arts and Commerce at Canacona. The workshop was supported by the Ministry of Earth Sciences and Ministry of Science and Technology, Government of India.

The workshop was held for the high school teachers of the taluka, including the higher secondary teachers.

The chief guest, Mr Radhakrishnan, director of Novadaya, Leadership Institute, Mastimol, Canacona, inaugurated the workshop and complimented the college for organising such an important workshop. He said that we all need to mitigate carbon dioxide emissions for the posterity of our future generations.

Dr Jagmohan Singh, the principal of the college welcomed the gathering and introduced the resource speakers. Dr Joseph De Souza Rauto, senior scientist and project investigator gave an overview of the programme and said that the programmes were designed at generating a high degree of awareness amongst the student and teachers community at large on the impacts of climate change.

Dr F M Nadaf, the coordinator of the workshop, expressed his happiness on the large attendance and response to the workshop. He detailed a road map for the taluka which could also be replicated in other parts of the state. He also asserted that on October 2, this year, the taluka would be commemorating one year, for the tragic disaster event.

Dr C P Hiremath, assistant professor of Geography, of the college also made a presentation on climate change and related climate changes from a geographer’s perspective. He presented the impacts of climate change in the land use pattern, change in agriculture and forests systems and water bodies.

A detailed exhibition and video on the impacts of climate change, its prospects and retrospects, also formed part of the action plan programme. Ms Manasvi Desai of the college compered the programme and Dr Nadaf, proposed the vote of thanks.
