MAPUSA: Work on the new Siolim coastal security police station is behind schedule. The work of building this station began in 2008, it is more than two years now, and the project has still not been able to see the light of the day.
The construction work had begun in February 2008 after the foundation stone for the same was laid by the Home Minister, Mr Ravi Naik in presence of the then DGP, Mr Brar and Siolim MLA, Mr Dayanand Mandrekar.
Though initially the station was supposed to be inaugurated in 2009, work on it, after the initial progress, fell behind schedule, resulting in its delay. The present rooms that are used by the Siolim coastal police are in a complete mess. It is a nightmare for the police officials to work in such an environment, incidentally many policemen at the Bardez police stations are subjected to bad working conditions. The Siolim out-post that comes under the jurisdiction of the Anjuna police station is also functioning from the same place as is the Siolim coastal police station.
In fact, around 11 policemen of the Anjuna police and the coastal police are sharing the same area.
Even the quarters of the policemen here are in a very bad state. Sources at the police out-post here said that the PWD is monitoring the work of the new station and the contractor, who was executing the work, left it incomplete as his bills were not cleared on time.
Even though just slight work that could probably take just one month is pending, it cannot be taken up due to the rains, as it also involves the exterior painting work.
Siolim coastal police inspector, Mr Anthony Monserrate, when contacted, admitted that the work was held up due to some ‘problems’ but also added that the PWD officials have agreed to take up and finish the work soon, probably after the rains.
