MARGAO: Congress candidate for Fatorda constituency, Mr M K Shaikh has come under the Election Commission scanner since complains have been made that his election office violated norms as it is less than six meters away from the St Joaquim Chapel, Borda.
The returning officer and Deputy Collector, South Goa, Mr D M Redkar stated that the Congress authorities had not stated the address of the office at the time of asking permission.
"The Election Commission will look into the matter and request Mr Shaikh to shift the office in case it is in close vicinity of the religious structure since devotees frequent the chapel. We will serve a notice if need be," stated Mr Redkar.
However, Mr Shaikh asserted that the EC guidelines state that no office can be in the premises of a religious structure but the office is on the opposite side of the chapel divided by the width of the road and as such no controversy prevails with the office.
