PANAJI: The next president of the Goa Pradesh Congress Committee could be person chosen by Mr Rahul Gandhi, the Congress general-secretary, who is set to play a major role in the party’s affairs in the days ahead.

According to sources in the Congress circles, the new president of the GPCC is expected be named later this month or latest by the middle of December. The sources further said that the new GPCC president is expected to be someone who enjoyed the confidence of Mr Gandhi. The sources said that the GPCC was set to be overhauled and only efficient and party loyalists were expected to be appointed to it. The new committee of the GPCC would be given the mandate to revitalise the "demoralised" party cadres, the sources said.

Meanwhile, for most of the Congressmen in Goa, especially the younger generation, the decision of the party high command to give Mr Gandhi more responsibilities in the party affairs is a sign of an attempt to resurrect and give a new direction to the oldest political party of the country.

A Congress legislator from Curtorim, Mr Aleixo Reginaldo Lourenco said that Mr Gandhi was the best leader to lead the Congress and the country. He said that Mr Gandhi is a serious leader who is determined to change the course of politics and lead the country from the front.

Mr Lourenco, who had recently met Mr Gandhi, stated that Mr Gandhi was also dedicated leader to the cause of the party as well as the people of the country and has vision to change their destiny for good. It is high time that Congressmen rally behind their leader and work for the cause of party and the nation, he added.

Mr Savio D’Souza, a general-secretary of the Congress party in the state, feels that the time was opportune for Mr Gandhi to take to shouldering more and higher responsibilities in the party affairs. The party needed the services of younger leaders to give it a better direction in this modern age.

"He is a patient, distinctive and a daring leader and in a country that has nearly 70 per cent voters below 35 years of age, Mr Gandhi is an ideal choice," said Mr D’Souza adding that it was high time that Mr Gandhi takes over as a major player in the party affairs and ensure that party moved in right directions to serve the people of the country.

Another general-secretary of the Goa Pradesh Congress Committee, Mr Pravin Kunkolienkar, said that party leadership has taken right decision by giving higher responsibilities to Mr Gandhi, who has a clean image and is perceived as a leader of the future.

He further said the Congressmen in the state and the country were now looking forward to Mr Gandhi’s leadership.

"There is no doubt that Mr Gandhi would prove that he is a better leader," he said adding that there was a feeling among the Congress leaders that new winnable candidates with clean image would be selected by the new leader.

Mr Sankalp Amonkar, a former state Youth Congress president and who has seen Mr Gandhi’s working closely, said that many in the Youth Congress always wanted Mr Gandhi to shoulder bigger responsibilities. He said that Mr Gandhi has brought about many changes in the functioning of Youth Congress and National Students Union of India, having been in-charge of these organisations and effect was seen all over.

Mr Amonkar said that Mr Gandhi would be able to bring in dynamism in the party and revitalise the party organisation and motivate the older generation into delivering for the cause of the people and the nation.
