Open pit at Shristhal industrial estate misses eye of health dept

POINGUINNIM: Even though the health authorities are taking utmost care to reduce the cases of Chikungunya and malaria by holding talks, conducting allied and related activities to curb this menace, a pit 12-15 meters in length and about 5-7 metres in width, constructed by an unit at the Shristhal Industrial Estate, at Canacona, is being ignored, with no authorities claiming the right to dispose or close it and has become a breeding place for mosquitoes.

After some source informed ‘The Navhind Times’ about this malady existing near the residential houses, which are just metres away from the closed unit where the pit lies, a survey was conducted and it has been seen that the pit may have been constructed to dump waste of the unit, which now is closed and hence it lies uncovered now for reasons best known to the concerned authority.

However, while on survey, some residents have also brought to the notice of this reporter that another location, about 200 metres away from this pit, there exists another location, a stone quarry, which has been half filled by dumping of garbage and waste, which includes plastic bags, used clothes, unused utensils and other unwanted material.

The residents have therefore called upon the Canacona Health Authority to immediately check these places so that the same may not prove dangerous to the residents staying just metres away from these two locations.
