Mudslides hamper traffic flow in Pernem

PERNEM: The National Highway 17, which passes through Poroscadem in Pernem taluka has developed large cracks which is making motoring on it a difficulty. Moreover, there have also been mudslides on this stretch of road with the mud covering more than half the road, reducing the carriage way so much, that only one four wheeler can pass by at a time.

Added to this, trees have been uprooted in this mud slide and the debris is also seen in the middle of the road and a lot of the mud is now flowing into the river which flows adjacent to the NH 17 at this area.
The clearing of the mud from the road, as well as taking action to ensure that further mudslides do not occur are being undertaken, however, sources point that large cracks can be seen in the hill, raising fear of more mudslides and more trees falling victim to the same.
Locals and motorists fear that if this happens, then the entire road may be put out of action and vehicles would not be able to travel on this road, making life difficult for the people, as this is road is one of the main connection to the rest of the taluka and the rest of the state. Hundreds of vehicles use this road daily to get to work and beyond. Further locals say this could lead to the river basin being filled with the mud that flows into the river and could lead to the depth of the river being reduces, raising fears of flooding in the area.
