Locals ask Loutolim VP to verify electoral rolls

MARGAO: The Loutolim gram sabha on Sunday resolved that the panchayat should verify the electoral rolls in each ward.

If the rolls are found to contain the names of those who are not permanent residents like tenants or migrants then their names be deleted, it was suggested by the gram sabha members.

The gram sabha also resolved that this list be then given to the mamlatdar.

The gram sabha members discussed that at the special gram sabha held for this purpose, officials were only bothered about making corrections and not bothered about the veracity of the names.

The gram sabha wanted that only permanent residents be allowed to vote.

The meeting also again resolved to ask the sarpanch to write to the concerned authorities to nullify the panchayat body resolution on an alleged fake regional plan copy submitted to the authorities.

The sarpanch, Mr Jose Fernandes has agreed to do this within the days stipulated by the gram sabha. This resolution was also taken at the previous gram sabha.

Another resolution that was taken was to reject the bills of the panchayat secretary to hire a lawyer to defend himself.

The bills amounting to around some Rs 27,000 were apparently cleared by the panchayat body.

According to the gram sabha members, many persons had filed appeals against the information given by the secretary in reply to RTI applications and this lawyer was sought to be engaged to defend this.

It was also resolved to direct the panchayat body to take action against a compound wall built in a low lying tenanted paddy field. The gram sabha members alleged that the wall was built some time back but till now the body had not taken any action against it.
