Gandhi Jayanti celebrations at Santa Cruz
PANAJI: Social Welfare Association of Santa Cruz will be celebrating Gandhi Jayanti on October 2 with various programmes. Firstly, there will be a mass at 7.30 a.m. at St Cruz church followed by garlanding of Mahatma Gandhi portrait and a get together at 8.30 a.m. followed by a drawing competition for students of St Cruz constituency at St Cruz High School.
The competition will be held in three categories from standard I to X, from 10 a.m. Later, a ward wise 3-a-side tie-breaker will be held from 10 a.m. Cash prizes of ` 3000, ` 2000, ` 1000 besides gifts will be given to participants. The programme will conclude with lunch for poor at St Cruz High School at 10 p.m.
Quiz competition on freedom struggle
PANAJI: Adv Vishwanath Narayan Lawande Memorial Trust in co-ordination with the Navjivan Society of Freedom Fighters will be organising the 11th all-Goa quiz competition on Wednesday, September 29. The function will commence with homage being paid to Lawande by freedom fighters and public at 9 a.m. at Azad Bhavan, Porvorim. The theme of the quiz will be ‘freedom struggle Goa and India’. A skit competition will also be held for schools based on the same theme. The rolling trophy and prizes will be distributed by the chief guest, Ms Nirmala Sawant, ex-minister and social worker and guest of honour, Mr Raju Nayak, editor of ‘Lokmat’. The function will commence at 3.30 p.m. On this occasion senior trustee, Mr Shambhu Bandekar will also be felicitated.
Restricted water supply to Aldona today
PANAJI: Due to breakdown of 350mm dia CI pipeline at Sirsaim, there will be restricted water supply to Aldona constituency, part of Salem, Paithona, Penha-de-France and Malim on September 28. The public is kindly requested to bear the inconvenience caused.
Mashem school wins Green Award
POINGUINNIM: The Eco Club of Shri Nirakar Vidyalaya, Mashem-Canacona, has been awarded the ‘Green Award’ and has been placed at the first position at the taluka level for excellence in the Eco-Club Green Book Environment project.
It was organised by the National Green Corps, under the aegis of State Council of Science and Technology and Ministry of Environment and Forest, New Delhi.
A study of bio-diversity of sacred groves was the topic of the project. Deepak Gaonkar, Ratnadeep Adpaikar, Sagar Gaonkar, Pratiksha Kudalkar and Shodan Naik were the students who participated in the project. This project was completed under the guidance of science teacher, Ms Shobha Shetye.
Interactive session with P M Shirodkar
PANAJI: The Photo Journalist’s Association Goa (PJAG), will be holding an interactive session, exclusively for its members, with retired senior photo journalist, Mr P M Shirodkar, on September 30, at 9.30 a.m. at the Goa Union of Journalist’s (GUJ) office in Panaji. The two-hour session will focus on the changes that have taken place in photo journalism over the last 50 years, and the changing trends as far as digital technology in photography. The session will also focus on how to find stand alone ‘News Photographs’ and supporting news photographs for news reports and feature articles.
Rotary Mentor Awards conferred
PANAJI: The Rotary Club of Panaji Riviera held the Mentor Awards evening on September 23, to felicitate individuals in Goa, who have served as mentors to youth, bringing the talent of these youngsters to the fore. Mentors in Goa from the fields of sports, academics and music were felicitated on this occasion. While conferring the awards, the chief guest, Dr Benedict Arthur Gomes said, "The spirit of mentoring includes interest, commitment and an unselfish effort to bring cheer to others. Mentors give in terms of knowledge, skill and expertise, and help young minds to achieve excellence. Trust is an essential ingredient of the mentor-protégé relationship." Those that received the awards include, Ms Nirmala Rebello, principal - Sharda Mandir School, Mr Thomas Jose, coach - Sports Authority of Goa, Mr Savio Leitao, director - physical education - Mallikarjun College, Canacona, Mr Sivaswamy V - chess coach, Ustad Chhote Rahimat Khan - sitar Maestro. The president of the Rotary Club of Panaji Riviera, Mr Nitin Kenkre, welcomed the gathering. Vocational service director, Dr Mahesh Pai outlined the purpose of conferring these awards. Club secretary, Mr Clare De Souza proposed the vote of thanks. Dr Benedict Arthur Gomes released the current issue of the Rotary Riviera Club monthly magazine, ‘The Rivulet’ of which Mr Madhavi Shetye is the editor. The function was compered by Mr Atish Fernandes and Ms Madhavi Shetye.
Seminar on effective studies held at Colva
PANAJI: The Lions Club of Colva in collaboration with Komalsparsh Center for Psychological Consultancy, organised a seminar on effective studies skill for 92 students of Std X from Infant Jesus High School, Colva and St Jude’s High School, Betalbatim at Lions Club Hall, Colva. The seminar comprised of lectures with power point presentation, workshops with group studies and games. The psychologists from Komalsparsh, Ms Sharon Goes e Rodrigues, Ms Yulana D’Costa and Ms Mefra Severes, were the resource personnel who conducted the seminar. The seminar was inaugurated by Dr Blanche Barnes, director, Komalsparsh, in the presence of the president and other office bearers of Lions Club of Colva, along with other psychologists of Komalsparsh. In his welcome speech, the president of Lions Club of Colva, Mr Alexander Fernandes, hailed the existing working relationship between the Club and Komalsparch, which will be further enhanced and more programmes of this nature would be conducted. Reciprocating the future plans of the Lions Club of Colva, Dr Blanche Barnes, promised to support within the spectrum of their activities and later distributed the certificates to the participants of the seminar. The function was compered by Mr Manuel D’Costa and the vote of thanks was proposed by Mr Santanino Braganza.
No smoking campaign held
PANAJI: The NSS unit of the Government College of Arts, Science and Commerce Quepem, conducted a ‘No Smoking Campaign’ in collaboration with National Organisation for Tobacco Eradication (NOTE). As part of the campaign orientation programmes was held by Dr R G Kulkarni, NSS convener, D R Naik, Mr Dashrath from NOTE, Mr Anubhav Das from Impact Assessment Centre (WHO). Volunteers were asked to visit various commercial establishments such as hotels, restaurants, bars, pubs, shops and government organisations like hospitals to find out whether they have displayed boards indicating "No Smoking" "No Smoking Area" "Smoking here is an offence." About 400 establishments were surveyed by the volunteers and the same were submitted to the NOTE India office at Vaidya hospital, Panaji.
Blood donation camp held
PANAJI: The NSS unit of the Government College of Arts, Science and Commerce Quepem, Goa organised a blood donation camp (Rudhira), in collaboration with the Blood Bank, Hospicio hospital, Margao, on September 2, in the conference hall of the college. Dr R Kulkarni, NSS convenor welcomed the medical team led by Dr Vasundara Dessai. Doctor emphasised on the need of voluntary blood donation. 49 volunteers and faculty members donated blood. Demonstration of medical equipments and their functioning was held for the benefit of volunteers. Volunteers were given hands-on training in the use of the stethescope, thermometer, blood pressure kit, estimation of haemoglobin etc. Prof Smita Fernandes, Dr Jyotsna Dessai, Prof Jacqueline Menezes, NSS programme officers, organised the camp in co-ordination with Dr Ashok Mangutkar, Prof Susheela Mendes,
