QUEPEM: In an attempt to get their act together in the fight against unregulated mining traffic and lethargy of the authorities before the beginning of the mining season, representatives of Ganv Rakhonn Jagrut Manch met at Kakumoddi Chapel. The season is set to begin next month.
The meeting, that sought to discuss the further course of action in tackling the nuisance caused by the ore transporting trucks, saw Mr Babajino Fernandes argue that this coming season, the number of trucks would surely increase but pointed out that that the manch is not against the mining but the arrogant attitude adopted by the truck owners, transport contractors and the truck drivers, most of which are from the other states and have no regard for anyone.
An argument was made that it is often seen that the police are posted at various locations to regulate mining traffic, but most of the time they are busy talking on their mobiles and if the public approach them with their grievances they are always backing the mining lobby although they are aware that what is happening is against regulations.
Mr Atrey Kakodkar, an advocate, said that although the additional planks fitted to the cargo box of the trucks to avoid the spillage of the ore, this is being misused to fill the trucks with additional cargo.
He also alleged that even the transport authorities are issuing the fitness certificates to the trucks which are fitted with two planks of around 1 feet on the cargo box thereby violating the Motor Vehicle Act.
Mr Karmali said that although there are so many orders and notifications which could regulate the free flow of ore transportation the concerned authorities are not implementing the same but supporting and encouraging the law breakers.
Mr Christanand Pednekar said that during a review meeting in the office of the deputy collector, Mr Agnelo Fernandes in May, the Collector, South, Mr G P Naik had instructed the PWD officials to install speed limit sign boards but the same are not yet installed.
Mr Sheetal Kakodkar, also an advocate, explained in detail the rights of the people and the do’s and don’ts by being within the framework of the law, and that the High Court order of June 2010 gives ample right to people by which any authority can be held in contempt for violation of the High Court order.
