BICHOLIM: Heavy and incessant rains, which continued to lash the state till Thursday evening, led to the water level rising in Valvanti river in Sanquelim and Bicholim river in Bicholim.
However, with the intensity of the rains decreasing, the fears of these rivers overflowing were put to rest The intensity of rains decreased after Thursday evening.
The normal life was affected in these parts of the state and most of the people remained indoors.
There was water logging at several places including roads in Sanquelim and Bicholim. The low lying areas got submerged. The paddy fields at Mulgaon, Mayem, Narva, Amona, Kudne have also been inundated.
The uprooting of fruit-bearing trees in farms at Kolam-Sanquelim, Vathadev, Naigini, Mayem, Van Mavlingem has resulted into heavy losses. The landslide was reported at Narva on Wednesday — rocks and sludge came crashing down on the road. The Piligaon–Narva road has now been closed for traffic to prevent any threat to life as there are signs of landslide continuing. The Bicholim mamlatdar, Mr Pramod Bhat, electricity engineer, Mr Rajgopal, and PWD engineer visited the site and locals have been advised to avoid passing by the route. Nanoda village has been affected as the roads have submerged under knee-deep water. The residents of the village expressed apprehension as during the rains last year water had gushed into the houses causing heavy damages to property.
With the Tillari dam canal overflowing at Nanoda, water has been released at Kansarpal. The director of Tillari Irrigation Development Corporation, Mr Naresh Sawal, along with water resource department engineer, Mr Jacob, and talathi, Mr Naik visited the area.
Mr Sawal talked to the residents and assured them of necessary assistance in case of any eventuality and asked them not to get panicky. According to Bicholim fire station officer, fire personnel on Thursday attended two emergency calls. They removed one tamarind tree which had fallen on a cow shed belonging to Mr Ramesh Raut at Madhalwada, Sal, and saved property worth about Rs 50,000. There was loss of about Rs 5,000, said the officer. In another incident, fire personnel rescued one cow that had fallen in the drain at Gaonkarwada, Bicholim, on Thursday.
The government machinery has fully geared up and senior officers of all concerned departments are keeping a watch on the situation, informed the Bicholim mamlatdar, Mr Pramod Bhat.
