Colva Fama held amidst devotion

MARGAO: Thousand of devotees thronged the Our Lady of Merces Church, Colva, to seek blessings of Menino (Infant) Jesus and kiss the statue on Monday, the Fama day with fullest devotions.

Right from early morning - precisely before 5 a.m. devotees were seen rushing to the specially erected pandal outside the church to secure their place for the first mass. Others were seen flocking to stand in a queue which had already become some meters long by then.

The first mass was celebrated by the parish priest, Fr Joseph D’Silva at 5.30 a.m.

"This year the crowd was more than the last year,’’ confirms the president of the Confraria Committee, Mr Camilo Rodrigues. After the statue was brought down from the crypt by Fr Sacramento, the devotees who were in line for long hours were allowed to kiss the statue. There were plenty of children who had queued to kiss the feet of the statue.

People from all walks of life made it a point to visit the Fama. "I am here regularly. I celebrate the Colva Fama with my family,’’ said a Colva resident, Mr Joe D Souza, who works in Kuwait but makes it a point to come down to Goa in time to attend the Colva Fama. The boxes kept at a couple of spots here were also seen filled with wax impressions.

The kissing of the statue of Infant Jesus was allowed till 10.30 p.m.
