MAPUSA: Faiyyaz Sheikh, aged 12, and his younger brother, Yasin, aged 9, drowned in an abandoned stone quarry at Canca on Sunday afternoon.

According to the Mapusa police the deceased alongwith another three friends, all residents of Khorlim taking advantage of a dry weather left their house in the morning and came to Canca presumably to take a bath in the quarry located at Naikawaddo, Verla-Canca.

Towards afternoon all five entered the stone quarry. Unfortunately, the quarry was quite deep at the side which the two brothers were not aware of. No sooner they went towards the side unmindful of what was in store for them they got drowned in the deep stone quarry.

Incidentally, heavy rainfall in the last two days had filled considerable water in this abandoned quarry and the depth of the quarry could not be determined. Seeing the two boys getting drowned the other three came out hurriedly and cried for help. Though some locals came and tried to rescue the boys they could not be saved. Mapusa police and fire personnel who were informed immediately rushed to the scene. Mapusa PI, Mr Rajeshkumar also arrived. Fire personnel later fished out the bodies and they were then sent to the Goa Medical College where the post mortem is likely to be conducted on Monday. PSI Mr Dhawaskar is investigating.
